2021 4Runner OEM LED Headlights/Lights Performance and Retrofit

Sorry, been working a ton of extra hours at work.

I got them installed and wired up. Looks amazing. Cut off is insane. No dead spots. Shines out very far! The halogen low beam harness works flawless for the low beam Leds in the 2021.

I haven't thought too far into how to make those headlights work, most of the people upgrading to the Morimoto units have the lower end headlight units. When I get a set in need of modification, I'll tackle it at that time.

I haven't been paying much attention to this for a few months.

So are the bulbs on these replaceable? Ie., are the lights user-serviceable? That's been my big sticking point when looking at something like the Alpharex Nova series. Love the lights, I'm just not sure I trust them to work for years. If Alpharex backed their stuff by like a 10-year, 100% warranty, I would probably have ordered those by now. 2 years seems low.

Other than a few complaints like occasional dead LEDs in the DRL strip, narrow low beam pattern, and frankly underwhelming high beams, the Morimotos at least have proper optics.

The Alpharex headlights are cheap, re-branded Alibaba garbage. Their low beam patterns are washed out and unfocused, limiting distance vision and making them dangerous to use on the road at speed. And there are pictures of the high beams aiming in opposite directions. They look cool on Instagram though, which is why people keep buying them.

If the lack of beam pattern pictures of the Alpharex lights weren't a dead giveaway, I don't know what else is. The Morimoto v2 units are hard to beat with the 5yr warranty.

Finally got to unboxing these bad boys from Alex. Thank you so much for the quick shipping and extra protective packing. They're off of a 2021 Trail Edition, so it's the LED low beams and halogen DRL/highs. Installing them tonight. Will post some light output pics later this week vs my current set-up (35W Xenon Depot HID kit).

I look forward to seeing the comparison. I still find it comical how Toyota retrofitted an LED projector into the existing housing without any changes to the design and called it a day.

Can you see what the modification was? Is it really as simple as putting a new plug on a single set of wires? Kinda what it looks like looking at the picture.

I believe it is that simple, Alex just installs a new plug on the LED low beam wiring harness.

It was nice getting some actual sunshine today! Moving back to Hawaii here in a few months, I will miss the beautiful PNW, rain and all.

I think we're nearing the end of life cycle for the 5th gen. Wouldn't make sense to do an entire sheetmetal refresh for the last year or two in order to accommodate a new housing design. Would have been interesting to see them do an LED reflector like the new Tacoma. Much more efficient.

Has anyone every identified what these dark spots in the illumination are in the lens.
They only get larger the farther away the light projects.
Are they in all 2021 low beam led projectors or just some?
