2022 backup camera quality vs prior years

Hi all, can't figure something out. I've owned a 2015 and a 2019, and now a 2022 TRD OFF Road Premium 4runner. All prior years was the TRD Off Road / Trail version (not limited)

In my 2015 and 2019, the camera was very decent, rear camera option only. Now in the 2022 (which has rear and birdseye), the camera quality for the rear camera is very bad. It's grainy, and a fraction of the quality from my prior trucks. I don't expect much for birdseye, but the main rear camera is literally the camera quality equivalent to something from 1995 (blurry, grainy, bad lighting etc).

Did they change the camera quality recently? or is there something in the settings that needs to be adjusted? Lens is clean, and I'm scratching my head. Or is it some software issue that needs to be firmware updated or something?

Any help would be appreciated. Another buddy of mine also has complained about this in his 2022, he came from a 2016 tacoma and he said his 2016 also had a better quality camera.

Hoping there is just a setting to be changed...we are about to order a new ORP. Though coming from NO camera, anything will be an improvement. With technology always improving, I can't imagine why an older vehicle would have a better camera!

The video quality I've seen on Youtube of the Multi Terrain Monitor doesn't look too great either. Is it the cameras, or the screen on the head unit?

I had a 17 before my 22 and I agree the new one seems worse. I don't think there is an adjustment besides the brightness and contrast settings.

I've notice the camera quality is really bad as well (or could it be the screen resolution as it seems quit low res?)

I did not have a previous 4runner to compare it to, but my 2007 Lexus IS250 has a better backup camera quality than that

I had a 2014 and now a 2021 and I notice no difference in camera quality or resolution with the newer head unit.

Could it have something to do with newer software for the "birdseye"?
My headunit, doesn't have that software that I know of!

Do any of you have the concave outline blocking the top corners of the lens? I never had this before and saw a full picture without the rounded blacked out corners.

okay, upon further inspection I have a theory for 2022+

The camera position the rear door is different than prior generations.
- Prior generations, the lens is flush with the plastic "4runner" trim
- 2022 the camera is tucked under the 4runner trim, a very different setup as prior years that I've seen. I only looked at this because i saw the top edges of my camera image blacked out and notice the trim piece was covering the top of the camera.

My theory: because the 2022 cameras are tucked under the trim, it acts like a shaded canopy to the camera lens, not allowing enough natural light, hence the grainy quality of the image even during the day.

If this theory is correct, this is a design flaw on where they positioned these new cameras on the 2022+?

I think I would take it in and if nothing else, look at the quality of others at the dealership!!!!

I feel like your 2021 looks a bit better than my 2022.

Also I just realized that when I put the view in full screen, the top of the screen is cropped with a black bar and we don’t see as high as when I have the split screen view (in both pictures, I have not moved the trucks, just pressed on the button to change the view)

Just another +1. Nice big screen in our ‘22 limited, fast response, but super grainy. Even compared to my daughter’s cx-5. Iirc worse than my old 4r orp too.

Ok, huge coincidence. We are down in California for the week and I picked up my rental at Avis. They gave me a 2021 4Runner SR5. The backup camera is way clearer. Chip shortage? Will report after more usage this week.

Last thing I was hoping to read as we are buying a 2022 ORP soon...to try and figure out if it's the camera or head unit screen, try as a test, is there anything else that gets displayed on the infotainment screen that could be used to compare the resolution or the '22 to previous years, i.e. how do the maps or anything coming from your phone via Apple/Android Car Play appear on the screen compare to a pre 2022 4R screen? Has anyone that sees a definite decline in quality mentioned this to a dealer/Service Dpt?

Screen resolution from the 22 head unit looks low to me (although not unusable) even when using nav

I can't compare from previous 4runner MY, but my 2007 Lexus IS250 is similar (maybe even slightly better), and my wife's 2021 hyundai elantra is insanely better than the 4runner (as if it was a tech from another planet comparing it to our old dinosaur lol )

Not 100% sure yet but it does seem like the head unit display resolution is weaker/lower-resolution. The top-view in my 22 is cool and all but the resolution is pretty weak. This ‘21 sr5 looks great by comparison.

Just bought a 22 limited and am pretty disappointed in the screen resolution and back up camera picture. Just have to wonder if it is due to the chip shortage and they just went with a lower grade quality pic to get the vehicles out and sold. Really hoping there is something in the future that will fix it/make it better.

Exactly...will there be an affordable fix? Someone needs to do a side by side of the '22 video quality next to an earlier model, and point this out to a dealer to get their attention that this didn't go unnoticed, and what are they going to do about it?

The "text" that is overlaid over the camera image flickers, like it's not getting enough power. Definitely a difference in quality not only in the camera image, but also the simple text when you activate that screen.

If all 2022 4runners are like this, I guess not much to complain about, unless Toyota is going to fix it. I'm a bit surprised how poor the quality is and how they went backwards for 2022+.

Now I'm starting to lean that this is a software or power issue, one thing is to have grainy camera, the other is to have blurry text. The text is only blurry during camera mode, once back to home screen its perfectly fine.

Does anyone have a limited version with birds eye that has quality worse than prior generations?
