2022 backup camera quality vs prior years

The "text" that is overlaid over the camera image flickers, like it's not getting enough power. Definitely a difference in quality not only in the camera image, but also the simple text when you activate that screen.

If all 2022 4runners are like this, I guess not much to complain about, unless Toyota is going to fix it. I'm a bit surprised how poor the quality is and how they went backwards for 2022+.

Now I'm starting to lean that this is a software or power issue, one thing is to have grainy camera, the other is to have blurry text. The text is only blurry during camera mode, once back to home screen its perfectly fine.

Does anyone have a limited version with birds eye that has quality worse than prior generations?

I have a 22 limited with birdseye and the 21 sr5 I am driving (renting) has a far better picture for Google maps and the backup camera. I can’t compare birdseye to birdeye though.

I wonder if it's the head unit. I tried to replace the stock one in my 22 the week I got it, and when the shop pulled it out, it had a completely different wiring harness from every other Toyota (so they couldn't, and I'm stuck with entune). Maybe they had to change to some low quality system because of the chip shortages? The screen is really bad compared to the Kenwood I had put in my Tacoma.

it doesn't seem to be any doubt that all 2022+ so far have this crappy camera / resolution issue.

The question now is, can anything be done about it? I highly doubt any dealership will care. If this is the product Toyota has decided on to cheap out for 2022+, I think we are hooped?

I never got a chance to test drive one, if I had know about this, I would rethink my purchase. Where I am at, all 4runners have to be ordered due to the shortage of them here in Vancouver Canada.

We ordered a '22 Limited and went to pick it up yesterday evening. While driving it around, my husband and I noticed how terrible the backup camera quality was in comparison to my current 2015 SR5P. The service manager definitely agreed that the quality was lacking when we brought it up to the dealership, and was getting in touch with Toyota tech today to see what can be done. They had not noticed the issues as we were one of the first 22s with the birds-eye tech to come through this dealer

I'm afraid we won't take it if this is just how they are now, and there's nothing that can be done. It just seems silly to pay to upgrade when the tech feels like a downgrade.

Anyways, will update if they are able to come up with a solution that is suitable.

Has anyone noticed if this is with all '22s, or just later ones? Is it the same Head unit as the '21s? Seems like this is a newish problem being reported.

Just spitballing here:

Do the newer head units have a different diffuser on the face of the screen that the previous ones didn’t?

My 2021 TRD OR has a matte finish on the screen that does a great job diffusing reflections and hiding fingerprints, but has the effect of softening the image quality, making the resolution look worse than it actually is.

I thought I saw in another thread where someone was complaining about scratches on their touchscreen it looked like theirs was a glossy finish.

(And no, it is not a screen protector, but it does have that appearance.)

The image quality of these cameras -even on my '22- is a joke. The back up cam in my '20 gladiator was pretty much hi def. Its a big let down.

Here is Toyotas response to my complaint on the cameras and crap resolution. If Everybody writes them, it would be more useful then complaining on here. Dealer typical response was...said it was normal, is what it is and they would update it for free if a firmware or software update comes out.

Toyotas contact info to complain is at the bottom of your Toyota owners page.

considering this isn't one off issues, but rather how they designed these new 4runners, I'm sure they aren't oblivious to the quality issue that all 2022's have. I'll definitely write to them, but for the amt of people on this forum vs general public, i highly doubt we will get the volume of respondents needed to make an impact unless Toyota generously wants to fix the problem.

Based on that email, if I'm reading in between the lines and the cryptic response, are they eluding that the quality issue is due to software/firmware vs hardware? If that's the case, that gives some optimism.

i'm not very tech savvy, but social media is such a strong outlet these days. Having a youtube video just highlighting this issue from a reputable source can pay dividends to get the exposure to pressure Toyota to look into a fix.

I was born a few generations too late, I barely understand how to use my cell phone and home alarm as it is. lol.

this was one of the first things I noticed when I bought my 22 ORP. Coming from a 2019 honda accord this backup camera looks 480p. I went outside and cleaned the camera and still same issue. Thankfully this thread proves im not crazy, hopefully a software update would fix this in the future.

My 22 ORP head unit is pretty crisp when using carplay so I don't think the display is bad; I do see that when using the backup camera it is pretty low res. I had accepted this as part of the "dinosaur" 4runner tech. For the most part a prefer it to be a dinosaur. That said...I'll be curious to see people post photos of their displays (granted the camera taking the photo could distort as well). to compare MY21 to MY22. I'll try to post some soon.

I don't think this is a dinosaur issue, partly because the text is perfectly fine and carplay works great. It's only when you switch to camera mode, the quality downgrades, and even the text is not as crisp anymore.

Even being a dinosaur, the 21 and earlier versions were still very decent. This is beyond dinosaur, more so a change in their programming or hardware that went in the wrong direction versus maintain the dinosaur tech we are all accustomed to.

I only noticed it cause i've owned 2015 and 2019, and those cameras were very very good quality when in camera mode. The resolution on the 2022+ general menu screen is still better than my 2019, just camera mode is the polar opposite.

Interesting, I did try to find the camera part number like others did (8679035061) and it does seem to be the same for 2015-2022 4runners. That would make me think there is something going on software wise as well.

I don't know if he responds as he's such a Youtube Star now, but I wonder what Toyota Jeff would think? Or the Car Car Nut?

Really hoping it can be improved with an update at some point. Very disappointing. I upgraded the wife’s ride from a 2013 Honda Pilot and the camera in it isn’t great but still alot better than the 22 limited I just purchased.

If they downgraded just the camera itself, that seems like a cheaper, easier upgrade after purchase. But if it's the head unit (sounds like that is not the case, unless it's the camera software installed on it, which sounds odd), that would be pricey to fix if it were a hardware issue.

I picked up a ‘22 ORP in December and the screen resolution is very lackluster (but honestly on par with my Q50), so I put on a glass screen protector from Amazon. It’s amazing how much better it made the screen look. For $20 it’s a worthy bandaid

Do you mind sharing which protector you chose and any comments on fit/finish?

Thanks

I got mine from YEE PIN because it had the fastest delivery at the time. But they’re all essentially the same with a different Chinese seller. I wouldn’t pay over $20, most are below that.

Edit: fit is very good, I installed it straight on looking at the head unit, when I should’ve accounted for the view from the drivers position. It’s off by MAYBE a millimeter, but it doesn’t bug me enough to rip it off and try with a new one, just something to keep in mind. It’s held up really well so far and cleans beautifully with just a soft cleaning cloth.
