Ask your buddy if he thinks it's the camera itself, or the Head Unit. If it's the camera, we could always swap it if we knew the part number for the "good" camera.

BTW, this is our first vehicle with a backup camera (and glad it has one as the new 4Runner has way worse view obstruction than our '99 4R), so have no reference as to what's "good", but don't think our '22 ORP is that bad.
I think ec15’s theory is the strongest. The mtm and surround camera features in the head unit are causing the degradation. Or, the act of ‘compositing’ the video feeds. Sucks. Guessing the video compute power in the head unit is weak sauce.

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows or knows how I can find out the tech specs and manufacturer info for the OEM 5th gen cam systems (rear backup or integrated MTM cams). I’m specifically trying to locate cam tech specs like resolution MP FPS aperture processor and other identifiers. Thank you.

Maybe, due to the mediocre quality of the head unit, the image will either be quality (one, rear camera) or quantity (MTM) ?
Along those lines, I'm curious if anyone who's installed their own front camera has noticed that doing so degraded the quality of the rear camera image, as if it overwhelmed the head unit's video processing a little?

So looking at buying ORP this weekend, but after test drive was severely disappointed in the quality of the backup camera and MTM. Hear that the MTM seems to degrade the backup camera quality. Is there a way to get rid of, permanently disconnect the MTM cameras? Leaving only the back up camera? Would that improve resolution of the backup camera? Brightness settings help any with clarity?
No because it is already programmed to display the multiple cameras.
If you unplug the cameras, it will just show blank spots on the screen.

If you install your own front camera, the aftermarket kits will only allow you to display one at a time (input switching) vs factory MTM technically being input aggregation.

After following this thread for some time, it makes me want to hang onto my 2021. Not giving up my Nightshade for incremental improvements such as MTM or a heated steering wheel.
However…
What if someone took matters into their own hands? Get the mirror housings that hold the MTM cameras but use your own, and wire up an always-on DVR system of the quality they wanted?
DVR head units typically have a HDMI or VGA out to view live feeds and/or multiple cameras at once. This would handle all the processing power without taxing the bandwidth like factory MTM.
Not sure about the touchscreen inputs working, I know there are at least some 3rd party CarPlay “dongle” systems that use android auto and CarPlay is just an app within AA (the apps auto adapt to the environment - they don’t have to be written specifically to support CarPlay like Apple’s offerings.

Anyone put a different head unit in a 2022 or 2023 model with the MTM? How did that effect the clarity? Still able to use the cameras? Better?

Imo it is lackluster on my '22 Pro. I have gotten into cheap rentals at heartz that are better. I knew this going in, so don't mind so much. That said, there are times it was much better, especially in bad weather.

Seems like many of the folks posting poor image quality have the multi camera MTM system, as opposed to just the single, backup camera. Is this the case? The single backup camera on our 2022 ORP is decent, though it's the fist one I've used in three or so years since we renter a Tundra, and don't remember it much.
This is the case for me. Came from a single backup cam on a 2014 to the MTM on the 2023 (if that's what the 360-like multi camera system is called on the Limited).

Someone speculated the budget Head Units Toyota uses have too little computing power to manage more than one image with any decent quality, so the MTM overwhelms it. In this day and age, it's sad they don't just charge an extra $500 and put in a decent, snappy, and powerful Head Unit. The navigation lag in ours sucks, especially for music from a USB Thumb Drive. It would also be nice if the HU had a few gigs of on-board Music File storage...*sigh*.

I thought my new 2023 ORP camera(s) looked terrible. But I only glanced at it long enough to see the all-around view once before I put the truck in the garage. We took the 2016 Trail Prem to the beach for two weeks, mostly because I didn't feel like moving every little thing from the old to the new.
That, and I didn't want to buy a $120 annual beach pass for the Cape Hatteras National Seashore for the new truck when the old one was gtg. We're on Ocracoke Island fwiw.
As far as NAV goes, I'm old and have maps. And we both have an iPhone if we get lost.

Has anyone figured out the pinpoint reason on such bad quality camera?
Are we still assuming (based on feedback) it's a chip issue of processing the resolution (during covid and the chip shortage?).
I want to press my dealer on this, since the truck is still under the 3yr warranty, but want to guide them somewhere. Curious if anyone has found a resolution to this by replacing a certain part, chip or camera?

When I brought it up to my dealer at first service visit with the hopes of getting it "on record", they simply asked if I had cleaned it. Didn't even document it.
I'll be going back in the spring and will be much cleared about wanting it documented. Doubtful it will make a difference.
It really is a crap camera system. Single camera in my 2014 looks "4K" in comparison.
