2022 backup camera quality vs prior years

Comparing our 2023 to our 2011, and 2018, I am pretty confident that the camera never changed and the reason the quality is so bad is that the screen keeps getting bigger and the camera video just keeps getting stretched without getting upgraded. It's an embarrassment, 2013 Ford Escapes have better cameras.
The bigger screen has little affect on the picture quality. I still think it's a software issue. Access the service menu and go into camera settings. As soon as you go into the camera settings, you will see the picture quality degrade.
When backing into our driveway at night, I've found that turning the headlights off improves the image quality. The screen is dimmed when the lights are on, with them off it switches back to daytime brightness/contrast settings. It's still poor, but better than w/ the headlights on.

you can rotate the interior light brightness dial all the way up until it clicks, I do that when I have the lights on, but want the screen daytime bright.

Mine is a 2023 ORP and the camera is plenty usable in the day and night for me. It seems pretty crystal clear during the day, gets a little grainy at night but still plenty usable. When I put the vehicle in reverse, the camera is one large image, there is no split screen with an overhead view.
I just received my Diode Dynamics hitch pod, C1 version, not interested in any brake light option. Anyway, pleasantly surprised at how much light it throws up my dark driveway in reverse. I tried updating my reverse lights to LED but that was barely noticeable. This option works great for me.
I know we’re talking camera res here and as I mentioned before I’m looking at mine through an aftermarket head unit as well, but this has done wonders for my sight lines.

Have been considering this as it seems the quality of the image is directly related to lighting conditions (maybe a poor ISO spec). When you ordered the hitch pod, did you get the extension cable or did it reach w/o it?

Didn’t see the extension option so nope, not necessary I guess… hardest part was wiggling off the OEM harness from the rear of the trailer ports, you make your connections there then obviously run your sheathed wire through the back of your hitch, plug in your pod and push it into the hitch. Easy peasy.
I wrapped the DD connection to the OEM trailer port connection with some fabric tape since the OEM connection there is sheathed. The DD wiring is well sealed but still, in my parts that area gets pounded with road salt.

My 2023 4Runner ORP is same way. Shit backup camera quality compared to prior years. Very disappointing and shameful of Toyota to do this when you spend $50k plus on a car to put out a lower quality backup camera image quality than previous years. If anything I would have expected a better image quality.
Also surprised when I showed up at dealership with cashiers check in hand that I only get 1 key fob. Nice last minute surprise as well. Still waiting on my second key fob

Its not the cameras, its a problem with the software.
Image quality is even worse with the MTM package.
You've said this before and I'm curious about what makes you think that it's software. Can you explain? My Limited has front, rear, surround views and they all look like garbage. Are you saying that the software is downgrading the video signal? Would love it if there was software-update fix eventually but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Go into the service menu.
(Vehicle running, turn off screen, 5 swipes in any direction. Restart veh when done)
Everything is clear until the camera settings menu is selected. Image quality of the menu is already downgraded before cameras are activated.
This is why I think it's software.

If the menu gets downgraded, it’s simply changing resolution prior to starting the camera feed. This was noticeable in older computers when starting PC games.
Also the picture is worse in MTM versions because of limited bandwidth which must be somewhat less than the sum of all camera feeds combined.
This “effect” is not limited to Toyota.
I also have a 2012 Range Rover with a 5 camera factory system. 2 fronts, 2 sides, and the “backup” camera position. The rear facing “backup” camera and the left downward facing “parking” camera have higher refresh rates than the other three, which you’d swear were 1 or 2 frames per second.
The faster 2 are about 7 FPS, lol.

I don't know what to think. The backup camera on mine (2023 ORP) seems a little grainy at night but otherwise is still plenty usable and is crystal clear during daylight, at least as far as I can tell. Now granted, I am not very experienced with seeing the backup cameras of other vehicles, but mine isn't anything like the descriptions being given here by many (super grainy, 1995 quality, unusable/useless at night, etc...). Maybe a batch of 4Runners got lower equality cameras put in due to supply issues? I do wish it came with a front camera, so going to look into adding an aftermarket one. Would make pulling into parking spots at the supermarket far easier.
