Are you talking about the sulfur smell you get when you have the back window open and are accelerating? If so, its totally normal.

If he is getting horrible FE, and more then normal Sulfer Smell, that may hint at an issue, possibly too much fuel making it into the CAT?
What kind of MPG decrease are we talking about?
I hate to say it, but you may want to take it to the dealer and have them check it out with their tool, and at the very least have them document your complaint incase you have issues down the road.

A lean mixture will produce the rotten egg smell, not a rich mixture. If it was rich you would have a raw fuel smell and soot buildup at the tail pipe. First suspect would be a bad sensor, but no error codes would most likely rule that out. Second suspect would be an air leak down stream of the mass air flow sensor, but any out of range reading would also throw a code. Drivability issues would also be present, like a rough idle.
If the fuel mileage has dropped that significantly, I agree with Wiplash that a trip to the dealer is in order.

Have you possibly used a gasoline with a higher percentage of ethanol in it than recommended by Toyota?

I found this on the Internet on a thread in which someone was complaining about the sulfur smell from their catalytic converter:
"There's sulfur in fuel additives; your engine isn't burning it completely and your catalytic converter is storing it and then releasing it as hydrogen sulfide when you add load to the engine and force more air through. Try switching gas stations, or fuel grades."

sorry for the delayed post. I have been picking up my Camaro...made 628whp...so that has been occupying my time! lol
No engine mods have been done to 4R whatsoever. Running 87 or 89 octane yields same smell. Smell is lessened when eco mode is Off. My gut says there's an issue with the cat. I'm going to reset the computer with 89 in the tank as an experiment and see what happens. Nothing is damaged on the exhaust. And I'm using exxon gas or kroger gas...neither make a difference. My camaro only gets Exxon 93 and I know that gas at that station is totally fine.

You can't actually turn Eco mode off, you are just turning the indicator off.

I can reset the ecm and the fuel mileage climbs back up to normal for half a tank. The cats are stupid hot after cruising on the interstate. I know enough to know something is wrong either mechanically with the material in the cats or something in the tune needs to be reflashed. I doubt its the tune because its something that is learned while driving over 100miles. FYI...this is all on 87 octane. I'm trading the truck in the next 30 days so I really don't care anymore. I love the truck, but I only planned on having it until 1Q 14 anyway.

Fuel milage goes up or simply the miles to empty indicator? There is a big difference. The indicator resets when the ecm is reset/battery detached. Are you manually calculating? If you are just worried because the indicator is less than the 430 miles till empty, that is normal. It will begin averaging average mpg and decreasing its estimate (which is all that really is). Mine now reads a whopping 285- 300 because low and behold, I average 15mpgish. Other than that, if you are worried, have it checked out.
