22RE Engine Revs When Shifting

Recently purchased a 1987 4Runner SR5 with 22RE and 5 Speed. She's got 223k miles and appears all original.

Engine starts fine and runs strong. However,

When shifting gears, the engine speed does not settle back down immediately when letting off the accelerator and even goes up a couple hundred RPM's before settling down after about 4 seconds.

Idle is good and starts right up every time.

If its carbed, I would get the carb rebuilt, it sounds like the jets are sticking in the open position and just letting fuel flow free to burn up ! If your fuel injected I would start with replacing injectors or maybe new plugs. Without more detail its hard to figure out vague problems have a great day and an even marrier christmas

When you push in the clutch and let off the gas, the motor is no longer on a load. The engine will rev up a little if your throttle doesn't close as fast as it should with a sticky throttle cable, sticky gas pedal, ect.

Shoot some wd-40 in your throttle cable and then use some compressed air and try to spray the air in the cable while moving the cable back and forth.

Also take a peek at your gas pedal assembly, make sure it's moving smooth and nothing is getting gummed up on the linkages. Take a look at your throttle return spring on your throttle body, make sure it has enough tension to adequately return your throttle body to the closed position.

I don't think there is anything broken on your 4runner, it just sounds like your throttle body isn't closing as fast as it should.

Mine does exactly the same thing, and i've driven other 22re's that also do it. It just drives differently from other cars. I don't shift til i've had my foot off the accelerator for a full second or so, to stop it from doing that.

On the other hand, when i have to downshift going up hills, the engine basically matches the revs for me.

Throttle cable not sticking/sticky
Butterfly not gummed with carbon
Cruise control cable disconnected to eliminate that
Fuel Injectors not leaking
Dashpot disconnected to eliminate that
Timing Good
Valve Lash Good
Spark Plugs Good
All vacuum lines look good
Air Filter new
Wiring good/intact

Could it be the EGR system?
