22RE valve cover gasket

So I have a toyota... 2wd truck (I know its not a 4runner but I figured that the same motors were used here), that had a new motor put in it about a year ago now. Drove it a couple of months and noticed it was leaking oil. I had it replaced because it was doing the same before. So since then its been sitting in the garage and I bought a 3rd gen T4R.

going back to the truck, I pulled the valve cover off today to see if I could figure out the issue rather than pull the entire motor out and take it back to where I got it. After pulling off the valve cover I noticed the gasket wouldn't fit in the grooves of the cover itself completely, it has about an inch that has nowhere to go. Is this normal?

And while I'm here asking questions, has anyone else had oil leaking on their trans from the back side of the block or know where I should look to see if it is leaking from there?

It should fit tight in the cover. Put a new gasket on it, I bet it solves your leak issue.

X2. Just make sure and get the valve cover gasket SET, which comes with the two half moons and the the round grommets the go on the top of the cover under the nuts. Use a little bit of silicone on the round side of the half moons when installing them. Also about a week after you do the gaskets go back and re-torque the nuts.

Yeah, I read around a bit more and decided to do just this (seems like this is a common place for it to leak). I did not use silicone though. I guess I'll wash off the oil that is on it and try starting it again soon to see if it's still leaking. If it is then I'll add silicone.

Ok, so it isn't the valve cover or the half moons. There is still oil dripping but it is not coming from the top. Would the next bet be the rear main seal?

More info on where. Still the back of the engine? Coming out of the bell housing? Rear mains suck in all toyotas of this era.

I'll grab some pictures tomorrow if I can. It is dripping off the lowest point on the trans but is not leaking onto the top of it. My biggest problem is that it is all covered in oil from before and I'm trying to figure out how to get in there and clean it all up. I ran it for about an hour today in the driveway and then let it sit for about half an hour and there were about 15 drops of oil on the ground in that time. This is nothing compared to how it was with the old motor but seeing as this one is new it shouldn't be leaking at all IMO.

Rear main is a good bet at this point, but you want to know for sure before you go to all that effort. Get some purple power and a couple bristle brushes. Resign yourself to getting soaked and filthy, then crawl under there and get to work. You've got to clean up the existing oil before you can find the leak.
