240 bucks for a brake pads change

Hello everyone,
After thinking a little bit more and reading through your comments, I think I will just go to my dealership and have them do the brake pads change. One thing that I was worried about with using aftermarket pads is the brake dust (I had that a lot on my previous car and I hate it) and the service advisor guaranteed me that there will be a minimal amount of brake dust that I will be getting or none at all since I will be using OEM pads.
Also since this is where my life depends on, I guess going to an OEM and the dealership will be the best decision.
I am still not comfortable of not seeing them changing the pads (I think I got a worse case of OCD) but I guess I can just ask them to give me the old pad that they said that it is less than 15% of it's life.
last question, do they also have to resurface my rotors?

That is called SPIN. Your service manager has about as much mechanical experience as my 14yo. Probably less.....My 14yo HAS replaced brakes before. I'd be extremely surprised if this service manager knows what a brake line is. MOST are clueless.
Brake dust is a concern....but ceramic brakes drastically reduce brake dust. The pads I have made by Wagner are ceramic. Hardly any dust. I'm guessing the Toyota OEM pads are ceramic.
Go wherever you feel is right. Just trying to help. Some people just blindly go to the dealer because they don't know any better.

If you've never worked on a car before don't start with brakes. Screwing up brakes is putting your life and others at risk. Yes they are easy to do if you know what you are doing. $240 isn't bad for the dealer doing it. I just replaced my front rotors and pads with OEM ones from my local dealer. I have the limited with the big brakes. Parts ran me $371. The OEM pads are ceramic according to the box. OEM is the way to go.

Thanks WilliamZ. I haven't done brake service before so that is a part why I don't want to mess up with it but mostly it's because my landlord doesn't allow me to tinker on my car. I can do oil changes and had done a couple of times before on other cars and twice on my 4Runner.
I also got a 4Runner V8 Limited, so I think it's going to be a great deal if parts ran you 371 bucks! Thanks again!

Here I am again. I went to toyota today and they found out that my calipers is seized, pins needs to be changed, rotors needs to be resurfaced. All will cost me 1100 bucks.
I called a local shop and they are qouting me 920 for the job but they won't be using orig parts. If I get my own parts, the labor will be 320.
What should I do? Are they just ripping me off?

Sounds like you waited far too long on replacement. I'd go with OEM and just have Toyota do it.
Sounds typical of a dealer to bait you in with a fair price then gouge you on other parts. There is no way that you should spend anywhere close to $1100 or even $920 at the other shop. I hope you said no. Where in the world are they coming up with that price? Are they charging you extra to resurface the rotors? You can get loaded calipers (calipers + pads) for around $100 each. That puts you at maybe $240 in parts and the labor for the work should be no more than $200. I would say you should be paying no more than $500 total at your local shop.

I can almost gaurantee that the pads are made by aisin on Toyotas
Something I noticed the first time I bought pads for my 03 was that they were made in Japan. The next set were made in USA. Both performed the same.

Get your own parts and pay the $320.
Go to RockAuto.com and order remanufactured brake calipers. You can also get them locally, but beware of the price as to not get screwed. Rock Auto charges $100-$125 depending on size (SE/Limited vs SR5) and brand for front calipers including core charge. When you send back you broken calipers, you will get around $60 dollars back, per caliper. The total outlay for your calipers will be around $100 (this is after factoring shipping your used cores back to them). You can get "loaded" calipers with hardware and pads included as mentioned above, but those come with unknown brake pads.
Like I said, do the math and see if it is better to get the calipers locally. If you have undercar parts suppliers locally, they will be cheaper than Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.
The pins are $2.50 a pair ($5.00 total), and the anti rattle spring kit is $4.75 ($9.50 total). These prices are from Rock Auto.
Now all you need is pads. You can see this whole thing will only cost about $200 in parts (depending on pads) and $320 in labor. That labor should include resurfacing you current rotors.
I recommend EBC Green pads. They are cheap, quiet, perform well, and hardly dust at all. OEM is also a good choice, but they will dust more than the EBC pads. I have the EBCs on my 4runner and they are great. If you want OEM pads, they should be between $60 and $70 at the dealer.

Ok guys. I finally had my brake pads, calipers replaced. I went to an independent mechanic near my apartment (a 2 mile walk) and they saw that my calipers indeed needs to be replaced. The mechanic is the actual owner (I think) of the gas station and the small garage.
The brake pads that they installed is Carquest brake pads, brake shoe, and Carquest calipers. Are these good brands?
They didn't changed my rotors as they said I don't need it yet but I may probably after 30-40k miles.
In total, 510 USD (parts, labor, and tax). Is this a fair price?

$510 sounds about fair. They probably paid about $200 for the parts, marked them up to $250 then charged you for about 2.5 hours labor. Much better than the $1100 from the dealer. Not really sure how they could estimate life of a rotor, but as long as you can stop that is what is most important.
