265/70/17 owners, wish you've gone bigger?

I'm in the market for new tires(Goodyear Duratracs) just not 100% sure what size I want. I'm thinking about the typical 265/70/17 with Daystar 2.5/1.5 mainly because of cost and MPG.

Any of you all that have 265/70/17 wish that you would have gone bigger(with bigger lift)? Like 285/70/17?

I think if I had that much lift I would, I installed a 3/2 for a while and had to bump it up to 275s. Also have seen others regret not going bigger when lifting more than just to level.

Seems like a lot of people are pretty happy with 265s and 2.5/1.5 or 3/2 though. Maybe others will chime in.

edit - 285s might be a tough fit with only 2.5/1.5

I think about it sometimes but I think i really just need spacers so some wider wheels with a lower offset to get the look I would happy with using 265s. I would hate to take more of a MPG hit than needed for my pavement pounder. hwell:

i swapped my barely worn 265/70/17s for 285/70/17s. So yes.

I for one am extremely happy with mine; Bfg all terrains. They're not to small, even after the fj swap. My gas mileage was almost unaffected and I am able to keep up with the guys running much larger tires when we're on the trai. I haven't had traction problems on or off road.

I'm running 265/70/17 and currently in the market for 285's. I like them a lot and they were a big upgrade from the factory tires but I've found I want to go a bit taller and run a more aggressive tire.

I love my Toyo Open Country M/Ts. I found the right offset wheel and only had to remove the bottom half of my fender liner to fit LT295/70R17 (33X11.50R17) with my Cornfed 3/2.

I get constant compliments on how the tires look and usually don't need any help in the mud holes or on the rocks.

Personally, I can't really say I wish I have gone bigger. I stayed with 265s because I chose an aggressive tire (Duratacs). Of course when I see pictures with 285s I think it looks great, but I'm not in a position right now where I can afford to lose a few more MPGs just to have a wider tire. I think with my wheel offset, and because the tire is aggressive, it looks pretty good. I get compliments all the time, and a lot of people assume they're 33s (I find myself correcting people a lot). Maybe in a couple years when I'm not daily driving my 4Runner, I'll go up in size.

I know my next set of the off road ones will be taller. Don't get me wrong, the 265s do really well and tend to get me into enough trouble.

I went 265s on my 2014 and not regretted it. Going to give them a run for a while. Then in 5 years or so when they are fairly shot I'll decide if I want to go taller.

But I'm only a casual to moderate offroader, no giant rock crawling or anything at this point

And yeah, not taking a hit on the MPGs has been awesome... Maybe when I'm retired and don't have a 50- mile commute every day to pay for

Sometimes I wish I had just stayed with my 255-75-17's. Now that Cooper has the ST Maxx that would be a great aggressive AT tire that still has good road manners.

Running 285-70-17's does look good, but you lose some low end grunt along with the few mpg. Not to mention with my lift, the 285's and the BajaRack I have just under 0.5" clearance getting into my garage.

The 265s have been good to me but I do wish they were taller. They look small to me now. I planning on some 255/75/17 for the next tire. If we didn't drive it so much, I might even lift it more and stuff some 255/80/17s or 285/70/17s under there. 275/70/17s may also be a good size.

BFG AT's in 265 on my '03 for a couple of hundred thousand miles and years of Colorado offroading. No regrets on the 265 size at all even with a 3" lift. Different trails in different places, bigger might have been better but it just never turned out to be necessary for me. YMMV.

i went 265/70 and did not regret it. would a bigger tire look better, yeah probably, and i do want them one day, but for the amount of on road driving/towing that i do, 285's made no sense at all. short answer is no, i don't wish i went bigger, but one day i most likely will

I planning on some 255/75/17 for the next tire.

I'm looking at the same size right now. They tend to be the same price point as 265/70s, with a little more height at over 32", but still a skinny profile. I've found some C load tires in this size that are the same price as standard load 265/70s, namely the Firestone Destination A/T...a tire I've had good experience with on my 2nd gen.

I went with 265's a few years ago because I daily drove the T4R a lot then, so it only made sense. However the family donated my Great Aunt's 1998 Cavalier a year or so ago and now it is my daily driver. So now I am with 285's, very very happy with them and love the look/ride etc.

My thoughts, if you drive a lot, I mean several thousand miles a month travel etc, stay with 265's. If you are an in town guy, don't drive hours and thousands of miles, go with 285.

If your asking the question on what to get, then you really want the 285's just trying to justify that, and I completely agree, because I did the exact same thing.

In the looks department, people break necks to look at it now, and didn't as much before lol.

No regrets. 265/70-17 is a popular tire size. You'll find plenty of choices and they actually cost less than the stock size. Anything larger and I think the affect on acceleration/handling/fuel economy would be too much. Greater speedometer error as well..

Did you have to do any trimming for the 285s? My 1.25" all-pros should be here this week. Did you have any issues with your alignment (Caster) with your set up? My set up is similar, but I used Moog Replacement V8 4R front springs (over an inch taller Free height than V6 springs). With 5100s at .85 I got between 2.75-3" lift in the front.
