265/70R17 With Nitto TG Rub

Hey folks,

I bought me some 2012 SR5 wheels, and was lucky enough to source a good set of 4 TG2s. I was coming from the stock flower 16s on my 08, so I suspected the 17s would cause some liner rub when I put them on.

I got the wheels and tires put on the truck on Saturday, and they look as good as I thought they would. WAY better. But, as I suspected, there was rub -- and not only the liner, but also the bumper corner. Interestingly enough, it was only happening on the left side in the front.

Being a resourceful fella, I pulled out the dremel and got to work... A couple hours later and the rub is nearly gone... For some reason I still have a tiny bit of rub on the liner on the left side only -- despite having backed the liner up 1/2 inch or so, and trimmed about .5" of the lower corner of the bumper. Not a big deal -- certainly worth the hassle -- but weird.

How and why would the right side of the bumper be different to give it more clearance from the front of the tire?... I can't imagine why the bumper would be different... Any ideas? The right side seems to be about 1/4" further away at least from the tire...

When was the last time you got an alignment done? Could be your alignment is off and you have more caster on one side than the other?

Have to had a chance to drive around with anyone in the passenger seat? Might be a simple weight distribution thing?

Good thought. I had the alignment done a few weeks back when I lifted the truck up with the Bilsteins. Without the paperwork here on the readouts I couldn't say for certain, but I am pretty sure the caster was fine. I haven't had a passenger since the wheels and tires were installed, so that could be possible... I'm not a huge guy, but I suppose that's 195lbs that the passenger side doesn't have...

I'll try the passenger theory and see how that goes. Thanks.

i read somewhere on the forum here that the drivers side is slightly higher than left because there is always a driver which evens it out ..

or as it was mentioned ,it might be your alignment.

its is also important to know how old are your shocks and springs? maybe one side has more wear that the other?


i had mine lifted with 5100s all the way up ,have 1.5" wheel spacers installed and still got a rub with the same exact tire,all i had to do is to unscrew two screws under the bumper where it meets the inner fender and make new holes in them and screw it back,the rub is gone....

Shocks are new -- like 500 miles new. Springs are the same age, so theoretically they have the same wear in them. The truck has 85k on it -- the springs should be fine. I also backed out the liner some -- maybe 1/2" back, and trimmed to screw down correctly. I've measured and they are still a bit different -- left to right.

I guess I could buy into the fact that the driver side might be slightly higher, given that there would be more weight. I'll look into that more...

And like I said, the alignment was done less than 500 miles ago. It should be fine.

I put on new coilovers, new 265/70/17's, got it aligned and had the EXACT same issue— slight rub on driver's side only. I also just moved up the fender liner a little and no issues.

My understanding is that the driver's side is a little LOWER because the gas tank and battery are on that side. A lot of guys on here put a small spacer on the driver's side just to level it. Makes sense as to why the outside of the tread might barely hit the fender liner. Just a thought.

I completely forgot about the battery, and the gas tank. That could very well be what's causing it. I've already trimmed the liner, and a little bit of the bumper, so I'll probably just leave it alone it'll correct itself. Thanks!
