285/70/R17 5th Gen

Finally a tire thread, right? :loco:

I'm going to ask that you post replies only if you have experience with 285/70/R17 BFG KO's on your 5th gen. Not looking for opinions or to start an argument of which tires are better than which but trying to find out what mods I'll need to consider if I switch my tires.

I currently have 275/70/R17 BFG KO2's mounted on the TRD Pro wheels on my 2016 TEP that's lifted about 3-inches with Icon Stage2. I did the front fender trim to eliminate rubbing when I put these tires on.

Currently, I have the opportunity to swap my tires for an almost new set of 285/70/R17 BFG KO2s at no cost (except the cost of mounting and balancing).

Does anyone have my setup or one close enough with 285/70/R17 BFG KO2's on? What mods did you have to do? I'm trying to decide if I want to do this swap. There are a few things I'm not wanting to do, like body mount chop, or change my wheels, and there are things I could consider, like spacers (although not sure if that would help).

The tire fitment thread says it all about that specific size. That's how I decided on mine. But I'm running fox 2.5 and had to do no trimming other than to mount my reservoirs. I don't rub with 285s.

285 KO2's on my rig. I only have a 3" lift and aftermarket bumpers. No trimming involved.

I had to trim about 1/8" on the plastic (which you already did) it doesn't rub my flaps at all. 2" Lift on TRDP

Do it. I hmmm'd and hawwww'd for awhile all for no reason. I have 285's and love it. Looks way better. drives a little heavier, tires track ruts and imperfections in pavement a bit more but no big deal.

285/70/17 BFG KO2's on stock trail rims (no spacers) with a toytec spacer lift up front. Removed front mud flaps but other than that no trimming required and no rubbing.

Doesnt matter what trim of the 4 runner u have.
285 = Width of tire
70 = Height of sidewall
17 = size of rim.

You'd be looking at 17x8 + desired offset size rims at a minimum.
Id recommend not going any narrower than 8inches.
IE: 17x8 +35 rims
17 = Height of wheel
8 = width of wheel
+35 = offset (where the wheel sits)

Plenty of wheels on the market, just look around the forum.

Go to Craigslist and buy a set of Trail wheels, they will look good, be fairly cheap and you don’t worry about fitment issues. You can easily go up one or two sizes in the future if you decide.

285s on stock rims, lifted 2"+

Those TRD Pro wheels are 7" wide, IIRC. The tire manufacturers recommend an 8" to 9" rim for that size of tire. Look at the spec's on the tire manufacturer's website. The SCS Stealth 6, 17x8.5" wheels look good to me and they are very lightweight, which is good for reducing the unsprung weight, preserving power and braking. I'm getting 17x8.5 ICON wheels so I can mount 285/70/17, a wider and taller tire.

I will be selling my 2015 Trail Edition, 17x7.5" wheels and stock tires by the first of the year. PM me if anyone is interested in buying these wheels and tires.

The tire supports 7.5 to 9" widths. The Stealth 6 has an 8 and an 8.5 width.

What factors go into the decision to 8 vs 8.5? Is wider generally better for traction?

Body mount chop and aggressive cutting, not trimming or pulling, of the front fender wells.

The crap has been going on since the FJ Cruiser, Toyota either doesn’t care or doesn’t understand that the theoretical limit of tire size on this vehicle greatly outstrips the frame mounts they use because it’s a common platform.

Nice looking rig! I'm picking up my 2018 TRD Off Road Premium tomorrow. I bought a set of black TRD rims, and I was wondering what type of black lug nuts you are using? Do they fit the TRD rim like the factory lugs? Where can I get a set? Matching wheel locks?

Factory TRD wheels just require standard lugs, i believe the fixed points are flat surface and not spherical/tapered like other after market wheels.
Gorilla lugs are a fairy good / cheap option.
Rays makes some good light ones as well, but i believe they are spherical.

You need to check with the stealership! I put the bronze TRD wheels on my Taco a few years ago and needed to purchase a new set of factory lugs & locks!

I checked with my local "stealership". Toyota only makes silver lug nuts, and they want $10 per lug nut!! $240+ tax for a set of lug nuts.....LOL
