285/75-16 on stock wheels?

I was looking to get a lift, and new tires. Now, can I mount these tires on a stock wheel? I have 16x7". I dont have the cash for aftermarket wheels, and I dont want a super wide setup either. I like the stock look, but a bit taller. What are your thoughts? Will a toytec.com ultimate lift 3" do the trick? Its a 3" compete with coilovers.
Tires I am considering are BFG A/T T/A KO

You may need to check with the shop that you want to install the tires. Most shops should mount a 285 on a 7 inch wheel. A few won't.

285's are a good fitment with a 3 inch lift. It'll fill in the wheel wells nicely.

I have 285s on my stock 16" rims. I think they're just a tad too narrow. 8" would be better.

I'm using 1.25 Spidertrax spacers on stock 16X7 5 star rims. 3" OME spring lift on my '99.
I do get a little rub at full lock, but I have not pounded down my pinch weld yet. 285/75r16 Cooper ST. I'll have some Goodyear Wrangler MTR's mounted up by the end of the weekend though.

285 BFG on stock 16x7, fit just fine and with no spacers. I dont want this thread to turn into a spacer thread, but I would advise against using them. I dont think you need them to fit the tires you want to run.

Discount Tire (American Tire) wouldn't mount 285/75/r16 Goodyear MTRs on my stock rims due to Goodyear saying that the minimum rim width should be 8" for the 285s. You can look at Goodyears site and they give a breakdown of the recommended rim width for each size of their tires. That being said, the vast majority of the folks here have 285s (and even 315s) mounted on stock 7" width rims (and many have a spacer (usually 1.25") as well). I opted for getting aftermarket rims. I paid ~$75 a wheel for my rims so it wasn't terrible.

Many folks have the Toytec suspension lift on here. Another place to consider is Sonoran Steel (sonoransteel.com) for either their 1.2 or 7.2 lift to get you around ~3" of lift. I went with Sonoran Steel.

Sometimes with 285s and the lift you'll have a bit of rubbing on the front bumper (usually the Limited or Sport type bumpers). A couple cuts on the inside of the lower bumper/fender with an box cutter solves that.

Agreed, except your stock front bumper sits to low...is that from a body lift?

What front bumper is that? i love that "shelf look" it has. Is it the ARB?

Note everyone needs spacers as I found out today. I have stock 96 wheels and no spacers or lift for that matter. Even at fool droop tires will not hit upper A-arms.

yes it is, that was before the bumper bracket. this is how it looks now.:biggrin2:

PS you don't need the spacers, but you do rub a little little bit on the runners Metal frame i never notice it till recently

I've got the same basic plan, Toytec 3" and 285/75's. I'm going with the Kumho Road Venture. I want tires before the lift because it's in need of tires now, I can wait on the lift for a while. I just want to be sure that the tires will fit w/o a lift, at least for a while. I don't mind a little rub at full lock, I'll probably use spacers any way. Thanks

Every tire the same size from different manufacturers will measure differently. BFGs are on the small size. The answers for the above questions are: probably, probably and usually.

Will 285s rub with a 3" lift? There are plenty of people running BFG 285s and most will have minor rubbing when turning the wheels, minor pounding and trimming needed.

Will 285s rub the upper control arm? The same tire on the same wheel on different vehicles may or may not rub. My friend (2001 4runner) has aftermarket wheels and 305s, that fit but are very close, will not bolt up to my 2000 4runner. The tire is crushed into the UCA on mine.

Will you need wheel spacers? Since the BFGs are on the small side of 285 you may not have UCA contact and may not need spacers. Spacers will make the front tires have a larger arc and can actually cause wheel well rubbing. There are 1/4" spacers that sandwich behind the wheel, not too bad but don't stack them. The bolt on spacers are fine but must be torqued and checked periodically. Hub centric are best (since the 4runner runs hub centric wheels, stock)

I am running a 3" lift and 265/75's and they are really close to the UCA. I am running 16" Tundra TRD wheels and dont know what the offset is. I have a feeling that if I went to a 285/75 it would rub.
