285/75 vs. 265/75 need help

Thats why I rub so much, due to the mud terrain tire. Also the treadwrights sit a little taller than most 33's. Where it rubs on my bumper lift wont fix the issue unless you lift the truck so high the tires are no longer going into the wheel well. We 4runner guys are lucky. I have lots of buddy's with xj jeeps that have to take flares off, fenders, hammer, cut just too fit 32's.

It's funny you should mention that! I had an XJ back in 2005 I lifted and put 35's on, and yes, it took a saw and big ass hammer to fit those along with the extended flares.

I can only imagine what a PITA it was too get them 35's in there. 35's, locked rear end on a d35 axle. Just as bad as our trucks with 35's on the front and locked with cv shafts. LOL

I actually got rid of the jeep to buy something that could tow a travel trailer across country. This is from when I transferred from Los Angeles to North Carolina.

Here's mine with the toytec ultimate lift and 265/75r16 duratracs. I to was undecided between 285's and 265's but the mpg's was my deciding factor.

OP- what gears do you have now, and are you willing to re-gear?

IMO 33's will benefit from regearing but not needed. Also for gas mileage when I was on my 265's I got 17.3 mpg on a 1500 mile trip, fully loaded, 4 people. Now with the 285's I get about 16.7 full loaded.

As far as "not needed", it depends on if he has 4.10s or 4.30s... 4.10s with 33 will be very undergeared,

power loss youll definetly notice it more on the freeway. mpg youll loose 2-3. as far rubbing goes i only had to trim a little bit off the front bumper so now at full flex i dont rub at all. no firewalll trimming was needed. i say go 285s, youll regret it if you dont. people make too big of a deal deciding between the two sizes.

im not sure what gears im running right now its just on factory gears for a 98 sr5 whatever that is. how do i tell? and ive heard that those who choose to re-gear for 285's didnt notice a whole lot when it comes to mpg and i do mostly highway and if you guys are averaging 16 to 18 mpg, thats not bad at all considering my 84' chevy c10 on 33's that i just sold got about 8-12 mpg... if i was lucky haha

I have 265/75R16s now and always thought they looked a little small, but I also didn't want to jump all the way to a 285. I found that if I moved to a 17" Tundra wheel I could run a 275/70R17, which is exactly inbetween a 265 and 285 in both height and width. Something to consider since you have the same quandary.

ya i agree with you, the 265's dont quite fill the wheel wells up and 285 is a big jump in tire haha i really dont want to go up to a 17" rim either because tires get more expensive and i like the look of smaller wheels too. as soon as the tires im selling on craigslist go i think im gonna have to get some 285 duratracs unless someone can convince me otherwise

Lol. FU. Not my stance at all. To each their own and to what fits their own the best.

I will admit though, the times the 265's look small is when you're sitting next to someone (say like the times I'm next to GSP) with 285's.

im thinking i should just go with 265's especially since i got 180k on the clock and if do 285's im just gonna end up dumping a bunch of money into it so im gonna wait till my next 4runner for 285's haha. they seem to fit your 4runner better than most, what lift do you have on there? I noticed in a thread you posted a while ago you changed up to 265/75 duratracs. how do you like em? got any side shots of it? thanks!

I recently upgraded from the 265s to 295s (33.4") and honestly I've seen barely any power and mileage loss. Granted the roads are flatter in my area and the only time I really notice it is going up hills. I feel it much more on my brakes than I do on power loss. Just some food for thought.

I have a 3" lift on mine. So far I love them. Haven't noticed any road noise (but I do have a loud muffler) and the looks and weight of them are great too. Haven't had much of a chance to play with them on wet pavement (it's been surprisingly dry around here). Like I've said plenty before, I'm not trying to run the biggest tire and my ride sees a lot of driving over hills. Do I like the looks of a set of 285's better than 265's? You bet. But for my personal preferences, it just doesn't make sense. Also why I said that it all depends on the person and situation. No one right answer on this one.

And a side shot like this or more straight on?

I like that, looks like a great balance between a DD and something too impractical, nice shot!

I have a 98 5speed with locker so it has 4.10 gears on it. I don't wish to re gear mostly because of the cost. 265/75/16 is the most I should go correct? I daily drive the truck and gas mileage is a concern. I will need to replace the suspension soon so thinking about a lift. Was originally going to go with SS 1.2 but I think it would be to extreme for the tire size and on the wallet. Any recommendations?

I had 285's on a 5-speed with 4.10's. I think it was tolerable and still able to keep up with traffic. You will definitely use 4th and 3rd gear more when driving at highway speeds in the mountains. Also kind of sluggish from a stop. I found it tolerable, but if I was keeping that set-up I would have probably re-geared to 4.88 eventually. Just a matter of preference. If you live somewhere flatter or lower elevation, you should be perfectly fine with a 5-speed 4.10 and 285s.

SS 1.2 is pretty expensive for what you get. I would either try to put together a similar lift using the junkyard and forum classifieds (SS 1.2 is pretty much just stock toyota parts anyway), or go with Toytec or OME. I don't think there's anything about the SS 1.2 that's definitively better than anything else out there. It's a good complete kit, but I think there are better bang/$ options out there.

Now I'm putting on 315's, so a re-gear is definitely in my future. :o
