295s vs 285/75?

Looking for some guidance from you tire/gearing gurus!

Alrighty so I'm currently running 295/70/17s Trail Grapplers on 17x8.5 -6mm offset Five Stars with a toytec ultimate lift upfront and bilstein 5160s + OME 896s in the rear. My tires are getting bald and I just gashed a tire the other week. I'm looking to upgrade to 285/75s but have read a bit about the gearing being way off.

Do you really think I'll have an issue coming from 295s? It already gear hunts and feels like a tank lol. Basically the same tire but one is taller and the other is wider. I plan on re-gearing to 4:56s, but that won't happen probably until next fall.

Alright. Basically you'll be running a 34" tire on stock gearing. Yes not the best situation, but I doubt you'll really be able to tell a difference between the 285/75 and the 295/70. Technically speaking the 285 should have less friction with the ground because it's a skinnier tire.

So plan on re-gearing down the road, but for now, you'll be fine.

Sizes depend a bit on manufacturer as well. The Km2 is really measuring at 34.0 and I'm off by 8% but running 4.56 with that tire is ideal. You'll love it when it's all done. Went round and round between 305/70/17 and 285/75/17. Decided skinner was better. It is. However your going to be slightly less than measured because you are running 17x9 instead of 17/8. I don't think you'll notice though.

I would think that the weight of the specific 285/75 tire you're looking at should also be considered. The 295/70/17 Nitto Trail Grapplers are really heavy at 71lbs, where the 285/75 BFG KM2 weighs 62 lbs. The 285/75 KM2 is 33.9" tall vs. the 295/70 Trail is 33.5" tall (radius difference of only 2/10 of an inch) but I would expect the +9 lbs of rotational mass to be a bigger factor in how the truck accelerates, stops, etc.

Even if you're set on the 285/75 Trail Grappler, that tires weighs 68lbs - the slight weight decrease over the 295/70 might be enough to offset the slightly larger radius from an accelerate/stop point of view.

I'm going with the 285/75/17 in most likely the KM2. I'm on the group buy for the ARB air locker and am also buying 4.56 gears. I've been talking with [MENTION=89562]bimrunner[/MENTION] and he's helped me out a lot, as always. Sounds like it' the best set up for this size.
