2nd gen cut-off top?

Just a random idea/question I thought about...

Has anyone in a 2nd gen thought about and/or actually cut/cutting the back top rear off & make it into basically a removable top or cut it & make a custom tanoe top or anything like that? I've had the idea but never seen it done and don't know how exactly it'd look after.

why not just buy a 1st gen?
technically it could be done easy but it would be a half top because of the rear doors.
if you have a trail rig you can do it all you want just make sure to put some roll bars in otherwise you risk death the rear section is a huge structural point so if you do cut it up make sure you use structural point mounting roll bars!!!!!
i cant stress that enough STRUCTURAL POINT MOUNTING!!! this means the section that on the is a structural point like body mount locations!
these areas are reinforced to support the damage in a crash.
with a roll bar at this location you will increase your survival odds more then if you just place a bar in any old spot.

It's on my list of things to do, but way down on the list. I plan on saving up and having a custom shop do it. I believe you can use the roll bar from a first gen.

Hooah...couldn't agree more ! Over the years I've seen too many people "build" what looks cool rather than what is safe! Too many of those same people don't understand that things like roll cages and such are only used in worse case scenarios, and need to be over-built rather than scrimped on. Just my 3.0 cents worth...and by the way, the pic of the "back-halfed" truck looks good, I like it. Incorporate portions of the gate, and you could have the back window roll down too.

I think a second gen conversion like that would be awesome! I also think/hope/assume somebody with such good ideas & enough disposable income would also have the sense to reinforce their safety.

Well I do agree, I would definately put some big roll cages/bars back there if I did it.. I'd keep the top, but what I'd want to do is kind of make it like the 1st gen, where I can custom fab bolts, etc. to mount it back on, but when it's summertime, I can have a Tano cover for it, which would look sweet. I'm not a big fan of that window on the back of that 4runner just to be honest, I like the rest of it though.
