hey, i'm looking at putting larger tires on my 4runner. Currently running 235/75/15s which works out to a 28/9.5/15. Wanting to go slightly larger to a 31/10.5/15 but i am questioning clearance issues. Has anyone put 31s on a stock 2nd gen or are the spacers needed. The spacers give 2" of lift in the rear, and if needed i can do the 1.5" lift in front aswell. I dont do tonnes of off roading so i'm not particularly keen on dumping 5-600 on a full lift when the mass of my driving will be highway. Also would i need to extend rear brake lines or anything like that? thanks for all info

31s were a factory option, they'll fit.
31's run fine on stock. They were, as stated above, a factory option. The only issue you may have would be if you have the notorious butt sag that developed from the weak rear coil springs.
The fix is cheap if that is the case. You can buy stiffer, heavier springs for the back that pushes your butt back up.

If you do decide to lift it a little, 2" doesn't require longer brake lines. I concur on the 31's also--they'll fit fine stock as long as the rear isn't sagging too badly.
thanks for the info, any on a totally off topic note, anyone have pics of exo cages on 2nd gens? I'm scheming about building tube steel front and rear bumpers, with tube steel side steps/ rocker guards, all tied together with tube steel bent around entire outside wheel wells and possible 1/4 panels. If i get really creative thinking of building a swing away tire carrier for back of unit aswell

I hope you don't mind if I chime in and tie your two questions together. First off, I run 31's on mine with stock suspension and have no clearance issues. However, if you are considering the exo cage, then you may want to look into the beefier springs for the rear end. With the stock suspension being so prone to sagging and all of the roundbar for the exo cage adding a lot of weight you are probably best off stiffening up the rear to prevent the dreaded sag.

yes i had taken the extra weight into consideration already. I installed new shocks in the rear last night, and am currently looking for some new coils to install hopefully tonight. I think i'm gonna go ahead and attempt the exo but will have to wait until the weather up here starts warming up a bit. Dont really feel like standing outside bending steel and welding at -35C. Gotta love when your own shop is full of other peoples projects, and you got no room for your own haha. Once i start moddin the **** outta this thing ill start up a build thread for any who are interested in seeing what it may become, or..... how ****ty it turns out haha. thanks for all the info so far. been a great help
