Forget what type of terrain you think he was on (everyone knows pics almost never do justice to the terrain).
The point is the 2wd 4runner has much more capability. Not just where it can go, but how frequently it can do it without problems, which might be even more to the point.

If you didn't mean to offend you wouldn't be telling me that I don't know what difficult terrain is. I can understand where you're coming from (except the fording one, not sure why you'd take a car above it's rockers through water) because the pictures don't show the trails. Even then they weren't hardcore but they also weren't places you take a car you plan on driving daily.

Didn't mean to come off huffy. I don't fully disagree with the statement, but as a blanket statement it doesn't apply. Now [MENTION=60147]the kid[/MENTION] full size trucks with 22s, 37s, and 4" too much lift, I can't imagine a situation where those are necessary.
edit - also my truck was featured in a (online) magazine so :barf: on anyone who doesn't like it.

I bought a 2wd 4Runner. I lifted it, installed a bumper and sliders, plus 33" MTs. I spent 4 years with 2WD. I remember a lot of jerks who gave me shit for this is exact reason.
I should have put my head down and bought a wagon instead. Clearly, wheeling my 2WD was stupid, because 2WD's are usually at the mall, or picking up kids.
I'm supposed to negate the entirety of a vehicle, solely due to one missing option that would literally go unused with daily on-road activity. Guess I'm just a no good poser, don't know right from wrong.

High ground clearance for the once or twice a year the thing actually goes over some overgrown old fire road.

(this doesn't look like much but I passed a Jeep on 33 M/Ts at the bottom and he was scared to go to the summit)
Now that's a poser and I've run into a few, too.
On Black Bear, a guy in a heavily modified jeep struck up a conversation with me as if I was a hard core offroader. That gave me pause, but poserness was confirmed when he informed me he was locked front and rear -- and this was right at the start of the tightest, most exposed switchback.
I've seen more posing with 4wds than I have with 2wd.

Hey now, I own a 2wd 4runner... lol But it was passed down to me, so in my case I am not complaining because I am fortunate enough to have a reliable (Yes lifted) vehicle. I would rather own my lifted 2wd, then a minivan that's for sure. I am not completely sure what the argument is here, but what does it matter if someone owns a 2wd or 4wd, maybe it fits their needs, and all they need is a 2wd...

I'll be honest, I personally don't believe you should bother to buy a 2WD Truck/SUV (defined as a Body on Frame vehicle and not a shit CUV) if you plan on off-roading... it just seems pointless to me. It could be because I see way too many Poser Road Queens done up like Off-Road Monster Trucks with nary a spec of dirt on them, or too many Poser 2WD guys get themselves stuck, or even that we sell far more PreRunners (some of which get turned into pointlessly lifted Road-Queens) than we do 4WD Tacomas at the dealership I work at.
But really to me it just comes down to practicality, if I am gonna use the truck off-road, I might as well buy the right equipment for the job and not short change myself.
That being said, guys like [MENTION=50591]gaterose[/MENTION] make me doubt the limitations off 2WD Trucks/SUVs with their builds and their ability to manage the potential hindrance 2WD imposes. But again it just comes down to practicality for me, I personally would rather have the 4WD ready to go if and when I need it rather than have to work around not having it.

I saw a 2wd 2nd gen a few days ago and you would never have noticed if you didn't see the front end. Has the same height and looks like any 2nd gen but it was missing...that front drive. I mean with that ride height it is noticeable because those pieces are all missing and that heavy skid plate up front isn't protecting anything. Its just my firm belief that 4runners should just have 4wd. They get the same gas mileage either way. I guess I just don't see the point of 2wd TRUE body-on-frame SUVs

I didn't even know Toyota made 2wd 4runners until 1996.
I think if we understand that a 2wd SUV is basically a station wagon, it makes sense. Growing up in the 60's and 70's, 4wd SUV's were pretty rare, even in snowy CO. I think there was one guy on our block who had a Wagoneer, nobody else on the block even owned a 4wd. But almost every family had a big wagon.
If you look at the automotive offerings, it seems that station wagons have just about disappeared (Subaru, Volvo and Audi are the only companies I can think of off the top of my head who make a vehicle called a "wagon" that they sell in the US.) But the need for a station wagon still exists, it's just that the role is now filled by the SUV.
If you can make it from where you are to where you want to go who cares? I had a 2WD and got tired of not being able to get to the end of the trails or getting stuck in a couple inches of snow (Seattle) so I converted it to 4WD.
At the time I made the best of the vehicle I had and use it to its fullness, isn't that what we should all be doing regardless of if our front wheels work or not?

either of those prices is exhorbitant. too many suckers in the usa, willing to shell out a shit-ton of money for a ride. $46K is more than half what i paid for my house in 1997 (still living in it, too). just shows that there's a lot more money than brains or common sense in the world. in the end, it's still just a ride, and it's your (or their) money.

I was trying to think of exactly why I liked having 4wd, and this said it perfectly. Well said.
Don't forget the Cadillac! For sure station wagons have disappeared but the thing I am knocking on is the fact that a purpose built SUV that is the same chassis as a 4wd but just looks like someone ripped the front drive off is dumb. For those people that wanna be higher above the realities of pavement fine there are crossovers for that or those weird Honda things that could be front drive or AWD. Our 4runners are the last of a dying breed and they are disgracing it by making it with 2wd. Heck even the jeep Cherokee or whatever is now sold in front drive(but they originated with a uni-body so they aren't real). But for those that drive a 2wd 4runner I am not knocking on you as a person or the extension of you(your runner) but I guess what I am getting at is the manufacturer and their appeasement for the greediness :tsk:
