33s on your 4runner? pictures please

265= tire width in millimeters, so 265 mm or 26.5 cm or roughly 10.4 in

75= percentage of with in sidewall height or 10.4 in X .75 or 7.8 in

16= wheel size

So the 265/75/16 is a 10.4 inch wide tire, with a sidewall height of 7.8 inches (remember this is both above and below the rim) on a 16 inch wheel. So 7.8x2+16 gives you a 31.6 inch tall setup that is 10.6 wide.

This is a rough guide. Some manufacturers will call this a 31" some a 32" and the same nominal size may vary as much as 3/4 inch or so among different manufacturers.

The earlier post referring to circumference of tires and its affect on speedo calibration is correct. The only other variable is the matter of how much fuel is expended in order to rotate each different tire. With a larger, heavier tire, more fuel is used in order to generate the same 2000 rpm. The variance only makes a real difference in stop and go or city driving. Once the vehicle reaches highway speed, it all sort of evens out.
Assuming all other variables are equal (weight, gearing, drag, etc) the following is true:
A vehicle with small diameter tires will accelerate great, but work harder to maintain highway speed.
A vehicle with large diameter tires accelerates like a dog, but cruises easily on the highway.

that goes entirely against what this guy said

which one is it 285 wide? or 285 tall?

I have no idea, cuz reading tires is like Latin!!

but I know that i had 265/75/16's and they were *roughly* 31's and I know that I now have 285/75/16 and they are *roughly* 33's

and thats a fact, use the tire calculator at Discount Tire if you need to, someone mentioned wanting bigger tires and saying they were more badass, so if bigger is more badass then the 285/75s is what that person wants.

That is by far the best explanation I have heard, now I think I know what the "aspect ratio" is! LOL

If you don't wheel much, I'd just get 265/75R16s. I like 33's but if I didn't see alot of dirt, I wouldn't run them. They cost more, they suck power from the engine, they require a lift and/or cutting and trimming, you basically can't carry a functional spare unless you get a custom bumper (or throw it on the roof), and they cause more wear on your steering components. If you don't need them, then I say don't get them.

I dont, I just wanted to know what you guys think I should get

if you are driving mostly on freeway, with no traffic, getting bigger tires will give you better gas mileage. but, in real life, it doesn't exist if you live and work in the city.

one advantage for bigger tires is to add ground clearance over stock size tires. specially when you air down to 12-15psi. but, there are few drawbacks.

a.) you lose power,
b.) you lose mpg on daily driving.

I quote from a race shop website:
"Whenever larger-than-stock tires are installed on a truck, it will have a direct effect on the truck's performance. Why? It has to do with the effective gear ratio. Your truck comes from the factory with the optimum axle gear ratio to work with the truck's engine, transmission, and stock tire combination as well as provide a good balance between acceleration and fuel economy. When taller tires are installed on a truck but the axle ratios stay the same; the effective gear ratio is reduced. This means the engine is forced to operate below its power band, and performance and fuel economy suffer as a result. In order to restore the effective gear ratio (and the truck's performance), you'll need to have the axle gears swapped to lower (numerically higher) ratios."

remember, when you switch from 31" to 33" tires, you are getting 1" of extra ground clearance. when you wanna climb a steep hill, you may not have the power to get up there, but could be just fine with 31" tires. that's why you see those off-road buggies with 40" tires and 5.29 gears. that way it has ground clearance and power.

then why don't the 4Runner's come with tire/gear combination like that from the factory? because that's very very expensive.

when I had 285/75 on mine, I noticed it took longer to accelerate when getting in to freeway traffic. when driving up hill, I need to stay on lower gears longer than normal. luckily I have a manual, not a big deal. but if you have an auto, it can really mess it up.

if you like 33" just for the looks, then you don't need any reason for not getting them.

I guess we could all post just pics and have no words. So how about Mobil 1 oil filters? Let's ride bikes. Dancing with the Stars is gay. Mmm, pizza and beer.

Pennsylvania.

I think a mean tire will be too scary. I want you to run kind, gentle tires.

And the winner for having BY FAR the most confusing and incorrect post......is.......

No... they are both the same width at 75...

285 are approx 33" tall
265 are approx 31" tall

the more badass tire will always be the bigger one.

I have laughed more reading this single thread than I did watching an entire hour of Eddie Murphy playing multiple characters in some movie I didn't bother to catch the name of....

different tires from different manufatures have different over all sizes. no, they are not the same width, 285 is 20mm wider than 265 tires.

BFG AT/KO
265/70/16: 30.7"
265/75/16: 31.8"
285/75/16: 33" or 32.8" for load "D"

BFG KM2
265/70/16: N/A
265/75/16: 31.9"
285/75/16: 33.1"

and you totally missed the post where I congratulated a poster on being by far the most clear with his explanation of tire sizing...

and explained what I was trying to say...

the person who asked this question was asking which tire would look the most "badass" and stated he thought the "biggest" tire was the most "badass"

THEREFORE... the biggest tire out of the 285/75/16 and the 265/75/16 is the the 285...

but you didnt read that far did you???

try reading all the posts.. it will give you an idea of what is going on.. I was talking directly to the person who asked the question

CONTEXT means everything! thanks...

Seriously, no one cares if a tire is 33" or 33.1" or "32.8" its all the same!!!
you are seriously complicating the decision for someone that previously said that "bigger is more badass" PLEASE dont complicate things less than .4" in length!! LOL
:D

if you do care, that's the difference of ground clearance between 31" and 32" tires.

clearly, the OP didn't know anything about reading tire sizes and gear ratio(I'd bet he knows now), bad enough you are the one who fed him the wrong info, by saying:

No... they are both the same width at 75...

read again before you make more "" comments.

Watch this...

go to google... type in tire aspect ratio... click search.

...amazing what 10 seconds of research could have fixed.

why stop at 33? 35's would be more "bad ass"

:fro:

cuz' broken axle shafts, rubbing tires, and even crappier gearing is "bad ass."

Glad I'm not the only one who is having a little fun with this thread...

To the OP... I believe I speak for everyone when I say we do not mind answering questions and giving advice. It is OK to not be an expert on the subject of your truck. That is what forums are for... but keep in mind that on internet forums, as in life, there are folks who want to give advice without knowing what they are talking about. This does not sit well, and usually attracts some backlash.

The best advice I can give you to help you to start lovin' your truck again is to take some trips in it. Get some recovery gear, get with a group, and take a trip. You do not need much... just spend some time using google maps to find some interesting dirt or country roads in your area, and plan a trip. For example, I live in DFW. I have been working peice by peice on putting a trip together traveling off road or on dirt roads from east oklahoma to west texas. Just takes time, a GPS if you have one, and the will to get movin'.

Your 4Runner can do more things in stock configuration with some decent tires then most Jeeps can do after some fixing up.... so use it.

:guitar3:

I think it is... But I haven't broken an axle, my tires barely rub, and the 4.88s won't be much worse than stock on th hi-way... Again, not a DD, but hey... "Bad-A**" is in the eye of the beholder anyways...

You don't even have to do 10 seconds of research. I guess you guys missed post #57, but it was Wiki instead of Google.

Nice truck. :thumb3:

Very nicely modified.

Are you locked in front???

I seriously doubt the OP has anything other than stock gears... so 35s would be... uncomfortable, but may look the part while sitting still. I still do not see the point of putting on bigger tires, when without lockers they will just spin...

don't forget that freeway on ramp can be pretty damn degerous, too.

Trust me, I read every word of every post in this thread. ;) I do understand what you were trying to say about the badass tires, it's just funny, so it got included in my funny quotes.

The tire size thing....eh, context still doesn't help that one out too much. I mean, it kind of does....but it just goes from being completely wrong to mostly wrong. :hatsoff: :)

BTW, I'm just playin. Everybody has to figure this stuff out somehow...it's just gettin' figur'd out in a funny way this time around.

Its all good! I even stated earlier on that tire sizes were like Latin to me! You got what I was sayin though! sometimes I just type away and think that everyone is thinking what I mean, not what I type...
