3rd Brake Light wiring

I'm looking into wiring a flashing module in line with the 3rd brake light. Does the wiring from the 3rd brake light run back into the tailgate where I can access it from the below the rear glass? Or does it run back into the cab of the truck?

Hi DLH,

From the schemed wiring plot it looks like it can be done with limited hassle... Idk just 'Why' you'd want it to flash independently, or 'When' e.g., while parked, when pulling a trailer, or when the lamp is on... but it's none of my concern! You may need to install a resistor in series with Third brake-light (to avoid 'hyper-flashing), or, pick a 12V NON-Load dependent flasher; meaning the relay/flasher does not flash depending on how much load runs through the contacts like a conventional turn signal flasher does.

It has it's own 'dummy-load' built into it's coil circuit, so matter how much or how little current runs through it's closed contacts, it doesn't care because it's not dependent on what's running through it's secondary contacts... it opens and closes due to a 'Fixed-internal load'. The one in the link below has an electronic flash timer 'Built-in' so it's not subject to a hyper-flash scenario Amazon.com: JDM ASTAR EP27 5 Pin LED Turn Signal Flasher Relay for Hyper Blinking Flash Decoder Load Equalizer 12V 0.1W - 150W: Automotive. They do also make and 8-pin to replace the Toyota OEM flasher but I'm not sure what it may do having an assortment of bulb types in this circuit, "see below": Amazon.com: Boltlink LED Flasher 8 Pin LED Turn Blinker Light Flasher Relay 12v Dc Application in Toyota Cars Only and Adjustable - 1 Pack (8 Pin Led Flasher, Yellow): Automotive

I would recommend that it you do install a third brake light flasher, that you wire it on the GND side of the overhead LED just to be sure they'll be no back-feed; causing the other bulbs e.g. turn signals, parking lights, back-up lights, hazards...etc to be affected by this aftermarket circuit. So... you don't remove the factory flasher and replace it with this added aftermarket device. You'd need to install it inline with the overhead LED's ground wire (BLK/WHT) to see that it does not integrate with the factory wiring design, "see below:



The BLUE arrow points to the third brake light ground wire with LED just above it (you can tie-in your flasher contacts here... and the GREEN circle shows where the light is grounded, independent of all other lighting, and the RED arrows are pointing to the brake light source; signifying that there's no other lamps sharing that circuit that could be interfered with!

Okay I believe that's it... please post back; perhaps you could teach me the benefits of using a flasher in that circuit, I'm looking for something else to do regarding new mods anyway lol!

Check your local laws. Most flashing red lights (even rear) are illegal unless on official law enforcement or first responder vehicles. This doesn't mean people don't do it and get away with it (mostly motorcyclists) but it can be a hassle to get pulled over for something stupid like this.

Holy smokes! Sorry Greg! I never got the notification for this and was going back through my history in search of something else and saw this. I ended up having a buddy with a little more knowledge than me install this. Honestly, I can't remember which line he wired it into, but I can report that there aren't any disruptions with the other lights and works as it's supposed to. The third brake light flashes when brakes are applied for about 3-4 seconds. The intention is to provide a better alerting system to drivers behind other than the solid brake lights in a sea of traffic.
