Found some of the white face gauges from a 2001-2004 Tacoma PreRunner in the junkyard. Will these gagues simply "Plug and Play" or will I need to take them apart and transfer the white backing to my original 4Runner Gauge cluster ? The visual differences between the two are minor, setup is nearly identical; tach/temp left, speed/fuel right. The only thing the Tacoma gauge cluster does not include is the gear position indicator[PRND2L] which is unnecessary anyway. Also some of the warning lights maybe alittle different but over all these two insturment panels are very similar. Going into a 2000 SR5 4Runner. Anyone have experience doing this swap? Answered my own question... Decided to take apart the 4Runner to compare, the 2001-2004 tacoma gauges do not plug in directly to the 4Runner Harness. The gauges are so close the faces could likely be swapped however this would require removal of the needles therefore throwing the speed and tach out of calibration; not to say they would not work but the readings would be off.

you could find the pinout for both the tacoma and the runner and move some wires around in the harness...if you're up for something like that...
I would be up for that kind of a mod if I had wiring diagrams for each. Although something I found when comparing the two, 4Runner had an additional "Plastic Box" attached to the back of the gauge cluster that the tacoma gauges did not. The Box on back of the 4Runner gauges had 2 plugs ins that looked very much like those used in the headlights/tail lights, while all the others(3) were flat and wide. This was the only real difference between the two. Toyota must have updated the wiring in 2001.
