3rd Gen 4Runner Lift Information and FAQ's

Gents,
I have a 99 4R Limited 4X4 - wife has a 2015 Tacoma TRD OR. I am replacing her suspension with Bilstein and OME.

Will the stock Tacoma front shock and spring set up work on my 994R? and the rears?

I am sure there is a guide somewhere, but been reading tons of info on Tundra, thought I would upgrade to this if it fits. Plus it is free.

Thats a pretty new truck. Not much info on it. You can remove the top hat, swap your 4runner over, install and see what happens? Guinea pig for us.

The tundra coils and struts up front should be a good match for the bumper you have. I'd probably go with the bilstein 5100 series in front on the bottom or the first notch up. The LC coils you'll probably want the 7 wraps since and bilstein 5100s too, that would be 3-3.5 inches in the rear. I personally would go with the OME 891 coils in the rear if you're going to tow with it since they are stiffer and made for that along with the airbags you shouldn't have any issues. Just my 2 cents though. You're set up you had picked was doable but the ride might be a little uneven front to rear with the different shocks. That's what I had done at first. Matching shocks works best.

That's what mine looked like with the front tundra struts and rear bilsteins with OME 891 coils. For reference. No bumper on it at the moment.

Nice height! How much of a lift did you get off this setup?

front springs, probably, shocks 100% no. Rear shocks, possibly, but the ride quality might not be what you want.

I have a 2001 Toyota 4runner SR5 4x4

Looking to put the following lift on my 4runner and i am wondering if anyone has had any issues with their runners after this lift. Things like control arm issues, bushing wear or drive shaft issues are things im checking on before i do this.

BK9602 - 3" lift ToyTec/Bilstein kit for 96-02 4Runner

I'm running this lift with an Addicted Offroad plate bumper in the front and I love it. I added SPC UCA's and you might want to do the same to make sure you can get it into alignment. It's worth it to do it now versus later since everything will be apart.

25460 - SPC Upper Control Arms for 95.5-04 Tacoma and 96-02 4Runner

I pulled my front sway bar off. Even with the dif drop you should keep an eye on your inner boots of the CV's as they may start leaking and will for sure at some point rip due to rubbing. Keep the OEM CV's when you replace them, reboot them with the boot stretch mod.

Just put some 906's/5100's on my 96. Measures out to bottom of fender exactly at 36" from ground with brand new 265/75/16 and 22" from center of hub. FYI...Bilstein BS...you wont get any new hardware for your front 5600/5100's. Top end shock....but they want you to re-use your old worn out crap. So far it's pretty stiff and bouncy. Not judging them yet as it was totally worn out before. I will need to get on some back roads to really be able to judge their overall ride.

I'm planning on doing the 99 tall springs for the 1" lift.

Can I pair those springs with the stock shocks?

I was also thinking 4runner Bilstein 4600's, will these work?

When I look at Bilsteins it also has the option for the 5100's "w/ 1" lift" so I'm not sure if I need to buy these since I am technically lifting it 1"?

I'm confused as to what combinations will or will not work with the 99 tall springs.

Thanks.

Get the 4600's. They will ride the best and can handle the 99 coil just fine. 5100's are adjustable and would give you control over front ride height by setting the shock perch level.

4600's it is!

Thank you sir. :D

Just a heads up only negative to that setup would be Ive heard those coils dont handle weight the best. So if you loading up the rear a lot it may sag. Some have added inner coil air bags to fix this issue.

Good luck.

Hm interesting. How much weight are we talking?

Can anyone comment on the correct or best Bilstein shock to pair with the OME 890? I've seen many references to the Tundra rear (24-100144) and a couple references to the 4th gen/FJ shock (33-187174) that most people use with the Cruiser coils.

I bought the 4th gen shocks before doing enough research, and then saw all sorts of stuff about tundra rear shocks with the 890.

I've read that since the tundra shock is meant for a leaf sprung rear, it's not the ideal solution. 3/4" bushings must also be purchased depending on where you get the shocks. I've also read that they're ****ing fantastic and the best choice.

I've read that the FJ shock is too long for the 890, and there's risk of spitting a coil. (My research finds that the FJ shock is roughly an inch longer both compressed and extended than the tundra shock. Bonus is it bolts on without needing new bushings, and if I ever want to upgrade to LC coils I've got the right shocks. I've got the Sonoran Steel bump stops, and the SS guy says they are the right stops for either shock choice

So what say ye on running the 4th gen/FJ shocks (33-187174) with 890 coils? Risky or right?

Oh, and one more thing... I've got firestone airbags for stock 4Runner. Are those things going to work with the 890s?

Thanks for any and all info, despite how conflicting it may be :yo:

To answer my own question, 890s are fine to use with the 4th gen shocks (33-187174) I got clarification from Sonoran Steel.

I'm stuck, I have a 1998 2WD Base Model 4Runner. I want to lift it so I can put 33's on it, I was thinking about buying a leveling kit because it's cheaper and I won't be off-roading.
Do I need to lift the front and the back or just the front? Saw somewhere that I only need to lift the front..?

Yes lift both front and rear
Use rough country if you want less expensive
