3rd gen LED headlights!

I like the idea of LED lights. And I have been doing some shopping around, and lurking on this thread to see what been done.

I found these;

And I wondered what people thought, if anyone had tried them yet.

Also about the DRL flickering issue. Apparently this is a CAN-BUS compatibility issue that Toyotas are know to have. Basically, DRLs run the headlights at a lower power level than normal. This makes the LEDs flicker because they aren't gettin enough juice.

While I still haven't completely warmed up to the drop in LED headlight market, I do believe that their are companies out there that are beginning to put in the R&D to make a solid halogen replacement. Is it worth the cost, I don't know. It seems to appear that LED's are superior to HID's in most ways. Instant on, no ballasts and accessories to worry about, less glare, etc.. I still think there is some work to be done but the market is heading in the right direction. Typical ebay and amazon products are always going to be junk to me. Similar to HID's, anything from ebay or amazon never was worth a damn.

I will say that I've recently found a company through TacomaWorld called Brite Ass LEDs | LED Headlights | LED Conversion Kits Their products seem to have a good amount of R&D behind them. Not to mention they are going to offer a 7 day money back guarantee. Not satisfied just send them back.

I have seen the other cheap chinese LED kits and the difference between theirs and ours is night and day (no pun intended). These are the real deal. Honestly, it's been tough to market them outside of our local area because of the bad reputation from the cheap kits. They are very easy to sell around here because as soon as people see them in person they want a set

Bump for info regarding the DRL flicker

So the sylvanias burnt out finally and I now have an excuse to put these in. A few things are going on here that I don't like.

First, I'm stumped on how to make them work with the weather covers. See the pics. Should I just trim away until I make them fit? What about the heat sink? If that's exposed to the elements in pretty sure it'll short out, no?

Second, I had to disassemble the bulb retention clip because it wouldn't fit over the top of the heat sink. Now when it's clipped on the bulb has play in it it/moves a bit.

Help? I did plug the one on and ran the working sylvania and the led and its a huge difference.

Ok, so a quick update:

I was being a dingus about the retainer clip. Turns out you can actually remove the silver 3 prong light mounting plate from the rest of the bulb assembly, simply put that in place, attach that to the retainer clip and then insert the bulb and twist it into place. I can provide pictures if you need them.

Still not sure what to do about the lack of weather proofing though. Ideas?

The lights themselves are bright, but I think the brights could be brighter. Ah well. My aiming is wonky anyway, and I've never been able to actually aim them right I think.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the dust/water boot for these lights?

My initial impressions about the lights themselves:
Their low setting is quite a bit brighter than my old Sylvania UltraStars, and I like the blue/white color of the light a lot. I haven't been flashed yet, but I aimed them on the lower side to be on the safe side. I might gradually eek that up.

Their high beam setting is pretty weak. It looks like it's actually a dimmer bulb that lights up and just literally illuminates an area above the low beams. That said, I think I will have much less need to use the high beams because the lows are so much brighter than a traditional bulb. I'm hoping this is true, and if not, I really might ditch them sooner than I want.

I haven't had a chance to use them in the mountains yet, and that's where I'll really get a feel for them. Hopefully that's coming Wednesday evening.

I unplugged my DRL box. I keep my headlights on at all times anyways since Utah drivers are horrendous.

Hello. We may be able to help you out. Attached is a pdf that was put together by one of our customers, detailing his install. He has some very good photos of his modifications to the dust boot that he made in order to maintain the seal. This was for the install of one of our H4 kits from Brite Ass LEDs | LED Headlights | LED Conversion Kits , but it may also help you out. Does your kit allow for the fan to be screwed off of the back of the bulb? If so, the install should be very similar. Good luck!

Ok so I got them in this week, but between me being sick and my shop stupid busy I started working on the 4runner and have not got it all back together!



so I had to at least through them in just to see what they look like and I was blown away!!!

Just jumping in on this. Just installed exact same lights in my runner last night. Beyond happy with them. Again high beams could be brighter or maybe bolder but not at all disappointed. I suggest highly to anyone on the fence. Great clean color and crisp cutoff line. And matches perfectly to my 20" OKLED light bar installed tonight.

I hit the switch and now it just turns on my brights. I haven't confirmed that it also turns on my fog lights in addition to the brights, but I'm 99% sure it doesn't. The brights were the exact opposite of what I needed in the snowstorm I was driving through and it made for an exciting few seconds on I70.

Any thoughts? I tried messaging the seller on eBay but I never got a response and I'm not too thrilled about this little "caveat". I'd love to give you guys my business instead since you've already gone above and beyond with posting that PDF of the boot mod.

Had the same problem with mine. I solved it by doing the Anytime Fog Light Mod detailed here:

I'm not familiar enough with how the headlight wiring works to really understand what's going on, but divorcing the fog lights from the headlights will solve your issue.

One question on that write-up where it says "Run the other end of the wire to the left side of the 10amp taillamp fuse". How did you attach the wire to the left side of the 10 amp tail fuse? Anything special or just wrap the bare wire around the fuse?

Also, should I disconnect my battery when doing this or should I be safe with the keys out of the ignition?

I didn't tap into the tail light fuse. I've also got the "full time 12v outlet" mod done. When left stock, the outlets are only hot when the ignition is on. When the ignition is on, it activates the relay that allows the outlets to be hot. When performing the "full time 12v outlet mod" you take that relay out, and jump the terminals. Then, when doing the "fog lights anytime" mod, I ran a wire from the bent prong over to the signal port where the power outlet relay used to be. Now my fog lights only come on when the ignition is on (and I have the switch on the stalk turned on), and automatically turn off when I shut down the vehicle.

Hope that makes sense.

Nice, but holy hell those are expensive.. That's a good chunk of money towards a projector retrofit.

Any updates on your discussions with the factory? My son is itching to do this mod on his 4runner and we would like to make sure we do it right the first time. Would prefer to deal with a vendor on here that has checked this out rather than flying blindly.
