3rd gen LED headlights!

So let me just say... the PIAA led bulbs will blow you away with their performance. WAY better than any hid kit I've ever seen and I'd venture to say better than projectors. They illuminate everything, but not blinding for you or other drivers. Best adjective I can think of is crisp. It's like having 4K tv technology in your headlights. They are hands down my favorite mod thus far, and the compliments I get on them are unreal, especially from those pure enough to sit behind the wheel of thine 4Runner.

Absolutely worth every penny. My only regret is taking so long to spread my good review (been without a real computer since Sept, writing on tapatalk takes way longer). But I figured it was way past due and drafted one up and threw it up here on tapatalk anyways.

If you're on the fence, just do it. You won't regret it. And Jason is the guy to get them from. Great service from start to finish.

I noticed these LED bulbs you have now, how do they work with the DRL's? I was thinking about going HID but I didn't know what to do about the DRL and how they would run with the kit. Any help on these bulbs or other info would be great.

Good news, no bugs. Just talked to my guy at piaa. These work for 9-16v operating range. 9v is what daytime running lights are using. He said the guys with Tundra's FJ's, 4Runners no issues, but some chose to pull the fuse for DRL and just turn the headlights on when they get in the vehicle because they liked the brighter look and are seen easier.

I don't think it works that way--on our trucks, at least. On a 3G 4Runner with DRLs, if you pull the DRL fuse, you get stuck in DRL mode, and lose your headlights, at least as I read the EWD. The DRL fuse powers the relay that switches between DRL and Heads, and the open (no coil power) position defaults to DRLs.

That's why there are all these DRL-disable mods. Anybody that has DRLs want to confirm?

Again, if you want to keep them, you can, but for some reason most have disabled on 3rd gens for some reason. Maybe due to many aftermarket regular bulbs not lasting as long as factory halogen bulbs. Now leds will last even longer of course.

Sure, lot's do it. My point was you can't do it just by pulling the DRL fuse.

Thanks yea, when I called Piaa I forgot about the trick with the 4Runner when he was generally explaining those that don't like DRL just pull the fuse on "other cars"

I am very interested in these...

Do you have pictures of the install, specifically the engine bay? I was curious to see where you all chose to put the LED Controller boxes.

Here are some other questions that I have:

Do you notice any excessive vibrations in the lights when you drive on rough roads?
Do the lights flicker when listening to music with a subwoofer?
-Currently no flicker with JL 500/1 powering a 10W6v2 on standard halogens.

One Month Review of PIAA H4 LEDs

I would like to thank Jason B at Burtman Industries as he answered all of my inquiries very quickly.

This review is for the PIAA H4 LED Bulbs on a 2001 4Runner SR5 sans fog-lights. These have been installed for a month and have been through snow, rain and below-freezing temperatures. They've seemed to hold up well so far.

Previously, I had the same Koito H4 stock halogen bulbs for about 6-years including Daytime Running Light mode. I liked them but just wanted something brighter.

I chose to not use the zip ties and used 3M double-sided automotive molding tape to mount the LED Control boxes.

The color that the LEDs give off are a cool bluish white.

My personal opinion of the LEDs are rather high. They light up the road very well and do not blind oncoming drivers. Road signs reflect light from the bulbs from almost a mile away. They give our 3rd Gens a functional touch of class.

I have compared these to my mom's Lexus ES330 with HIDs, my sister's Toyota Corolla with factory LED headlights (probably Koito) and my significant other's Acura TSX with HIDs. To put it into perspective, the PIAA LEDs will not beat any of the above cars in terms of clarity and crispness. Stock HID and LEDs will give you more lighting area, especially closer to the front of the car. This becomes apparent when you do not have fog lights. Even the stock Koito bulbs that I had lit closer to the front better.

I was led to believe that the PIAA LEDs worked as DRLs without flicker. However, I can confirm with disappointment that they do indeed flicker. So I went ahead and snipped black with yellow striped wire from the DRL module underneath the dash.

One thing that I am happy to report is that my high-beam indicator works!

A concern that I have are that the stock dust boot covers do not cover the bulb all the way (You also need to cut them). This might be an issue for those for do some serious mudding. I have hit massive puddles and found that no water had made it to the bulb housing. You could also have a pair stock halogens on hand and install them before serious off-roading.

Are the PIAA LEDs worth it?

For those who want more light than a stock or premium halogen can deliver, yes. I enjoy being able to see well at night. Living in Idaho, we have many cyclists and wild game roaming around. Being able to see them ahead of time is a plus for me.

How?

With no cutoff shield for low beams it's not possible to tune the beam appropriately in a reflectorized housing. I know that PIAA states there is a "sharp cut line" but I'm not feeling it.

I'll be curious for someone to give a 12-month update - I'm suspicious of the external fans these use for cooling.

Had a set of HID projectors retrofit into new housings. Not sure one could really ask for much more than that! LED's seem like they're still not completely proven yet in terms of performance.
