3Rd gen offroad toolkit. What do you bring?

Well I was out on a logging road the other day and I had my toolbox with me. Now It's a 3 drawer portable kind loaded with tools... Well after about 5 seconds I was ready to ditch it in the woods and start buying new tools! Damn no amount of rags could silence the rattle rattle rattle. So next time I won't be dragging that 70lbs bastard around. What is essential for offroad repair and just generally handy. Also how the hell do you keep your tools from making you crazy when you're on the logging roads headed to the trail?

Usually I just grab the stuff I want and throw it in a smaller bag and stuff a towel in with it. You don't need every tool, just decide what you might need.

One day I'd like to buy these Smittybilt Part 5661001 - G.E.A.R. Front Seat Cover, Black -RH1

And set up some pouches for tools/ recovery crap. I have plenty of molle pouches so I'd be good.

Tools to handle most common problems: (3/8" Ratchet, Universal Joint, 3" & 6" extensions, 1/2" > 3/8" drive adapter, 10mm-19mm Sockets [deep & regular], 35mm & 36mm socket for CV's, 24mm socket for RR Diff/T-Case fill plugs, 10mm hex bit for F Diff fill plug, 3/4" Socket for Wheel Lugs, Spark Plug Socket, 6mm-19mm Combination Wrenches, Flathead & Phillips Screwdrivers, Vice Grip Pliers, 8" Crescent Wrench, 10" Channel Lock Pliers, 8" Needle Nose Pliers, Utility Knife, 18" 1/2" drive Breaker Bar, 5" 1/2" drive extension, 18" Crow Bar)

That list will handle 98% of the repairs that can actually be completed on the trail. If you can't do it with what's on that list, you probably need a tow truck.

I keep all my tools in a medium sized toolbag from Home Depot. It is portable and when I zip it shut and tie it down in the back it doesn't make very much noise. If I wanted to quiet it even farther I would throw a t-shirt in with the tools and zip it shut.

That's a great list. I would just add a test light, a DMM, electrical tape, duct tape, cable ties, and extra fuses. The last few are not really tools, but 'go with.'

Also, later 3G trucks take a 12mm hex for the front diff and not 10mm.

That was just a list of the tools I carry. I also carry all of the things you mentioned in your post except the DMM (good idea), along with a lot more 'go with' items, and a bunch of spare parts. My full list is near the bottom of post #1 in my build thread (link in sig).

RE the 12mm vs. 10mm hex for the front diff, I'll have to double check that to make sure that I have the right tool for the job. Thanks for the heads up.

+ chisel (useful for cv), mallet, spare cotter pins, loctite.

I also bring my cordless impact driver along most of the time I remember to grab it.

Maybe I'm missing it, but a DMM?? My brain doesn't seem to be working right now....

I have an old AMAL(Aloted Medical Allowance List) can that I bring with me when ever I go somewhere. In there, I usually have:

(The first two cans are one kit. It's the Craftsman 201pc ALL metric kit)

1-5.56 ammo can with ALL my sockets, from 1/4"-1/2",
1-5.56 ammo can with ALL my combination wrenches, line wrenches, and allen keys, extensions, and swivel joints.
1-5.56 ammo can with screwdrivers, plyers, wire cutters, butt connectors, electrical tape/shrink wrap, 18-20ga wire.
1-1500w power inverter
1-4.5" angle grinder, with cutoff wheels, flap disks, and grinding disk
1-Drill
1-pickle fork(GREAT for CVs)
1-5LB hammer
1-18" extension
1-18" 1/2" drive breaker bar
1-50' heavy duty extension cord
1-knife
1-Axe, with shovel, rake, pick axe, and other attachments
1-Fuel funnel, aka Donkey Dick
1-ARB air hose, with schrader chuck to fill the tires
1-tire plug kit.

Not in the AMAL, I have (2) 5Gal Scepter fuel cans; hence the need for the Donkey dick.

I'm sure there's some other stuff that I'm forgetting, but hey, I'm tired. Been working on the gas tank all day.

NOW, once I finish up my drawer system on my roll bar, 99% of that stuff will go in there. I have my own tricks for getting it all to fit in there. You'll see when it's done.

I will also be adding my HF 90amp Flux Welder to the kit as well.

Good stuff in here. Adding JB Quik Weld to everything that's been mentioned so far. It once got me out of a bind in another vehicle whose previous owner apparently overtightened or failed to use anti-sieze on a spark plug in an aluminum head, which decided to blow out while I was driving it on the highway a long ways from home. Could also be useful in patching many potential fluid leaks & other odds & ends.

Mine might be a little overkill but I've got a husky bag from Home Depot and have two of everything ( standard and metric). You never know what your going to need and what's planning on breaking. Good protection for you and for anyone wheeling with you. It's heavy enough it doesn't move and zipped up you can't hear the tools.
