I like the write up. I was just thinking about doing something like this. Went camping and wheeling with my kids and it was quite cumbersome to have to crawl around to roll the window down.

I did an aftermarket dash switch but didn't occur to me to put a switch in the back for when you are sleeping back there! I bet I could follow your lead and add one to my wiring setup--my wiring is in the drivers' side rear compartment though.

Thanks for the inspiration. I know this thread is old so I'l PM you too if I can figure it out. I'd love to see some photos of your storage and sleeping platform you mentioned.

Bump for an awesome mod! So easy to roll the window down in the morning and open the hatch. I also added bug screen w/ velcro and can adjust the window height mid-sleep if I get too cold or too warm.

Just did this! Thought I would leave pics of where I tapped the wires by the relay as opposed to in the hatch. Also, here are the appropriate connections if using a factory switch with pigtail like the one in the write-up above. Ignore the color of the wires (red/green/yellow) that I used to make the connections...the color here is obviously arbitrary but I don't want to confuse anyone.

Green w/ Red Stripe: Up------------------------Green wire

I had to tap into another spot for the up wire(green). My yellow is the ground and my white is down. This is on a 98 Limited.

I like that smaller stock switch and its location further up then Ive seen most mounted

New guy here! Well i've got an 02 and I wanted to do this rear window switch mod. Wired everything in correctly, and the switch kind of works.

My problem is the window only goes down using the switch if the truck is unlocked (specifically only the rear door needs to be), and the window only goes up when the truck is locked (again only the rear door needs to be). At first this made no sense to me, but then I realized that when I turn the key in that back lock cylinder, it locks or unlocks the door before moving the window 3 seconds later (depending on the key turn direction respectively). This is accomplished mechanically via a rod to the door actuator mechanism.

I've only read of one other guy with this same problem but he didn't know what to do either. My best guess is it only applies to 02 4runners, and maybe 01s as well. Why Toyota, why did you change it?? :smash:
Does anyone know of a way I can get around this, other than using a double pole switch that also sends a separate signal to lock/unlock the doors prior to moving the window. Any suggestions are, of course, much appreciated!

I worked on this same mod today on an 02 and had the same problem. Up will only work after turning the rear hatch key switch clockwise first and down will only work after turning the key switch counterclockwise. I'll work on it some more this weekend and post if I figure anything out.

Please do. I tried to do this mod on my 02 and had the same issue. I tried a few things and nothing worked so i gave up.

So after some time with a switch, the Truck, and an ohm meter I figured out the 2002 T4R rear window switch mod. See below.

I used a rear window switch I picked at a junk yard out of a 3rd gen 4runner (not sure what year).

* The Light Green wire on the switch must be connected to the Green/Red on the Truck (Black Plug). This is for Up.

* The Blue/Red wire on the switch must be connected to the White/Black on the Truck (Black Plug). This is the Common.

* The Blue/Yellow on the switch must be connected to the Green/Yellow on the Truck (Black Plug) and the Blue/Black on the Truck (Large White Plug). This is for Down. I thing the connection to the Blue/Black on the Truck is the difference from the other 3rd gens.

* The Red/Yellow and Dark Green wires on the switch are not needed.

If you use a rear window switch out of another 3rd gen you will have to cut an opening out in the hatch and drill a hole to get the switch wires out so they can be connected to the truck wires due to the depth of the switch. You'll see what I mean if you go this route.

I forgot to mention that the Blue/Black wire ( Large White Plug) on the Truck is the one in the center of the plug (not sure the pin number). There is at least one other Blue/Black wire on this plug an it will not work. It must be the one seven pins from either end.

Oops. Update on the 2002 mod. The fix I posted works but it also creates other issues I didn't realize when I posted. If you connect as I posted, when you hit the unlock switch on the passenger doors the rear window goes down. Oops. I guess is something that I will have to learn to live with because I really want the switch for the rear window in the back since I sleep in the back when camping.
