LOL - Sorry about the post and run! Busy Weekend...

I wish there was a better story to tell, but the reality is I paid a guy to put this engine into a "donor" vehicle with good bones but a worn out gasser at 285K.

If you are interested for more about the guys doing this, check out ToyotaDiesel.com or Toyota Truck & Jeep Diesel Conversion in San Antonio | Call DieselToyz @ (210) 683-9663

I'll see if I can get a video of the engine running as it rattles and purrs so nice!

That's a pretty great story. I want to do something like that when this engine goes. Please post a running engine vid!

And AJ. Quit messing around, grab your new camera and take some updated poser shots!

I've wanted a midsize diesel for such a long time. Not a full size truck, and not a $50K+ European SUV! I was sort of waiting around to see what would happen to Mahindra, but finally decided to pull the trigger on this.

Although the Truck has almost 300K on it, the engine has about 25K. Soooooo I decided I better upgrade everything to make sure it lasts as long as the engine - brakes, mounts, suspension, etc., and added a couple of niceties for myself. Leather kit, JVC head unit with new speakers and amp.

Anyway, here is a vid of the engine running.

SO jealous of your truck. Love that turbo spool. How much power does that particular TD make?

Edit: LOL at your dog at the door.

That looks and sounds like total crap. I'll take it off your hands for you.

I think they they put out 125 hp and close to 220 torque.

I think that's about right. It does have loads of torque. So much so that I went to slightly higher gearing to get better mpg's (3.90 up from 4.10). You can't see it, but it's intercooled too, which they *say* adds another couple of mpg's.

I haven't run enough tanks through it to tell, but guys with similar setups are getting 25-30mpg reported.

I also am running biodiesel made from recycled vegetable oil collected from restaurant fryers. :hungry:

@Hepar - :moon:
@KellyJ - good catch! I saw that as I uploaded it, and wondered if anyone would see him. I also love that turbo sound - I drive slow everywhere with the windows down now so I can listen to it. lol

thats so awesome obkook... can anyone in the U.S. just buy the turbo diesel engine and install it? why cant we have these engines when we buy them but we can put them in???? always never made sense to me.

there is a guy that i have seen around where i live with a turbo diesel jeep liberty... its pretty cool.

It's too bad that we can't get good diesels here. More torque, better mpg and lower emmissions. I think the US is the only country in the world that doesn't have 4Runner/Hilux with diesel as a standard option.

Do a search on ebay though and you'll find used engines.

Awesome swap! So you had the guys at diesel toyz do the swap? Also how hard is it to get it smogged in California? Thanks for the info

Thanks! I'm really happy with it! I spoke with Diesel Toyz and considered them for the swap, but ended up going with an independent. (PM me if you want his contact info).

Registering in CA is not hard. There is a "Statement of Facts" form at the DMV where you indicate changing motive power from gasoline to diesel. Then it must be inspected by a DMV person. Honestly, how easy or difficult that is depends on the people you draw for the job that day and what kind of mood they are in...

As for smogging, this is a '97 and pre-'98 diesels do not require smogging. That is a new CA law effective in 2010. Prior to that, diesels in general did not require smogging.

The reality is that smog stations are not set up to do smog tests for diesels yet anyway, and they go by whether or not the check engine light is showing any problems, followed by a smoke test which is subjective by revving the engine 3 times and visually checking to see if a lot of black smoke billows out.

I figure if I consume 25% less fuel, AND produce less greenhouse gas, this is a good thing for all involved (and mama Earth).

Do you know what kind of power it is putting out? I read that it's less than the stock 3.4.

Pretty sure it's all a guess at this point....with your original guess being fairly accurate...

Pretty much a guess as Quicksilvr says, but the original engine specs were something like:
3.4 V6 - 183hp / 294 N.m torque
3.0 1KZ diesel - 145hp (w/ intercooler) / 343 N.m torque

From a seat of the pants feel, I'm all about torque. Wider power band, towards the lower end of the RPM's. It doesn't produce as much top end, but that suits my driving style anyway. (but then I would rather have a torquey Harley than a screaming high revving Ninja too).

YMMV - I'm an old man and drive slow these days.

A few pics of my rig..Just bought it in July from my uncle. It has the Revtek coil spacer lift and 285/75/16 BFG KM's

:iagree: I'd sacrifice the 40hp for 50lbs of tq any day. Especially when it doubles my fuel mileage! If my motor ever goes I'll be looking into doing the diesel swap. Dumb question (haven't done any research yet) does the diesel bolt to the 3.4 auto trans?

The 1KZ-T gets 36 MPG on the highway? Hard for me to believe.

How do you figure you gain 50 lbs of torque?

Just going by obkook's posts, rating at around 30pmg, I only get 14mpg. And since were splitting hairs here, 343-294=49, there's the 50 lbs of tq. And 183-145 is only 38 not 40hp, sorry for the rough estimates, hope I didn't confuse anyone else.

Here's my general outlook on it. Turbo diesels are better than gasoline engines in almost every way. Stronger, last longer, fuel efficient and a lot less electronics. Never foul out a plug! If any of that requires clarification feel free to start a gas vs diesel thread.

again, nice build obkook:hatsoff:
