Hi. What is the deal with front licence plates in US? Are they optional? For instance, I love the looks of the Shrockworks front bumper, but I don't see a place for a licence plate on it. On the other hand, there are some pictures in this thread with 4Runners running front licence plates.

It depends on what state you're in. Some states require a front place while some states do not.

Or some people don't run them if even they are required. I'm supposed to, but I like it better without.

im pretty sure all states require them, only some enforce the require ment and of those not all of the police will give you a ticket or even pull you over for it. i know the west coast states are jerks about it, california oregon and washington, ive been stopped in all three(when i lived in each) for it. only got a ticket in oregon(****s). i have sense cut my front plates down(only showing the numbers/letters) and run them like that, gives a more euro look, and sense the vehicle code says nothing about them having to be stickered/tagged its not a violation. the plate is still clearly visible and readable.

You can only get a ticket for not having a front plate if you are licensed in the state that requires it.

not completely true, but they can only make the ticket stick(enforce the ticket)if your state requires the front plate. they can still ticket you, but you just fight/protest the ticket and it will be thrown out.
cops can and will(not all of them, but unfortunately, some are total Aholes) for anything they think they can make stick. some cops are total jerks and try to be "one man armys" out to make the next socialist regime

ok so i know its not a 3rd gen 4runner or even a 4runner so :flipoff: to all you who want to start bashing me for this posting in here... but i thought i would share with you all some pics from my new years day run. i chose not to take my runner cause of the weight, it does ok in snow as long as its packed down or im at the back of the pack. with only 2 rigs for sure going the other being a 1952 willys jeep(weighs about as much as a small child) i knew the 4runner would be a bad idea, glad i didnt take it as it would of just gotten thrashed by the trees and brush too. anyhow here are the pics

if its readable its good to go, the plate was altered yes, but their meaning of altered, is to change the lettering/numbering on the plate. the plate is still 100% readable. the rear plate was left unchanged as it needs to have tags. trust me i know what im talking about here.
-my vehicles have been certified by DOT in both washingtion and oregon for code 3. they have passed all OSP and WSP inspections and are accredited. i was asked why my front plate was cut down and i told the inspection officer my reasons, and he did not argue or tell me it was wrong or needed to be changed. he simply said "oh ok" and continued the inspection. the regs also state that the plate has to illuminated, is your front plate illuminated?
