Has anyone installed a backup cam on their 4runner? I bought a Pyle PLCM36 months ago, before I bought the truck. By the looks of it, it'll be a difficult installation. The TR4 dash is curvy so the monitor wouldn't sit flush and I don't see how the wires from the camera would get from the back license plate to the rear tail light. If anyone has installed a backup cam of any sorts with results, please post here with some details and pics if any.

Ok.
After watching an install of this, I think I can offer up some solutions for you.
1) Mount the monitor in the corner of the windshield, by the A-pillar. That's a nice, flat surface, and is up out of the way. Or, wound it doen by the shifter by doing some custom fab work like cutting, shaping, and all that jazz.
If those options aren't what you're looking for, then just clean the dash in the corner of the windshield, and stick it there. It shouldn't go anywhere.
2) For the Wiring to the reverse light, you're going to have to take the trunk panel off. Then, you'll have to get the camera wires ran through there, and UP the side of the window. Basically, follow the stock wiring harness for the back window.
Run the wire through where it comes into the body, across the back, and down the side. You'll be able to tap into the reverse light from there.
Now, since you've already all the wires running on the top of the passenger compartment, you minus well just leave them there.
Run the remainder of the wiring down the drivers side, tucking it into the plastic panneling as you go. Run the wires down the a-pillar, and plug them into the camera. Tuck them behind the A-pillar and there's your install.
You MIGHT need to get some kind of extension or something, but other than that, it should be a fairly straight forward install.

Ive got mine wired into my head unit in the dash. Works great, its just the $20 ones on ebay that go on the license plate. The worst part was trying to wire the video cable and the power wires in the back hatch. (the black ruber boot is the worst trying to get the RCA video connector through.
I connected the power wire into the reverse light on the driver side wiring so when ever i put it in reverse the camera automatically kicks on and i see it on the 7 inch screen. (VERY NICE)
ill snap some pictures real quick b4 it gets dark if you want tonight. let me know quick tho.

Shoot - I'd be interested in any pictures you could offer. About to pull the trigger on the camera, but not sure on the routing of the wires or the screen I will use.
X's 2! Got mine wired into my AVIC-Z130BT and I absolutely love it!! 7"'s of reverse sight! Absolutely amazing for backing up a trailer as you can look right at the ball on the hitch. Another feature that my radio has is the ability to turn the camera on while driving so you can watch the trailer as you drive.

so to start off. there are a few ways you can do this.
of course we need to run 3 wires.
we need a power wire that will become hot on command that will power the light and send signal to camera. i wired mine into my reverse light and i will show you a few pic here in a min. (ground is near by wire 2)
so those are 2 wires. power and ground.
the final wire we need to run is a RCA video cable. (mist video game consoles have a yellow red and white. we are going to use the yellow for video) but we are not going to run the red and white. only buy a single RCA. Also i had to use a female to female adapter because my RCA cable was too short.
so those are our 3 wires.
oops i forgot. we need 1 more wire to run from power source to the head unit so that the back up screen know when to turn on via a small power supply.
so those are our wires. here are some pictures...

a coat hanger made it easy to stuck down the pannel where the hatch support shock mounts. but still tight room
I installed reverse lights to help because of tinted windows and give more light since my tail lights r tinted

Rebumping this, I just ordered the camera from ebay, and will be installing it to a Pioneer x4500BT.

The yellow RCA runs to the head unit, the ground wire can just be grounded to the CBI bumper, and the power can just be tapped into the reverse wire going to the brake light? For a 02 does anyone know what color wire it is? And for the head unit to pop the video up when the car is in reverse, I need to run that same power wire to the back of the head unit that says reverse feed (I don't have it front of me to remember what it says) But is that all right? Am I forgetting anything, or wiring it wrong?

Hi there! I've been browsing on this forum for quite a long time now and found this interesting thread about backup camera installation. I'm hoping I could get some suggestions from you guys regarding backup cameras and installation.
I installed a backup camera on my 4runner and hooked it up to my Pioneer AVH1400DVD HU but I'm not quite happy about its location because it is too low IMPO. I installed it temporarily on my hitch receiver since I don't tow anything. The camera works fine but I noticed that when I shift to drive after backing up, the screen stays blank. It only goes back to normal screen (radio for instance) when I tap the screen but then it goes back to blank screen after few seconds so I ended up just turning the camera off. Anybody encountered this before? Any suggestions and comments is greatly appreciated.
I will include some photos on my next post. Thank you guys in advance.

It may or may not be the problem but when I installed my camera I couldnt get it to even come on. Thought it was broken. But I was going through the settings on the head unit, and there was an AV option and a camera option. I have to double check it, but for it to work in my car i had to have the AV on and the camera off. But works like you want it. Turns on when the car is in reverse and once its out it goes right back to whatever screen it was originally on.

Grommet help needed
I'm trying to install a backup camera on my daughter's 2002 4Runner but I'm getting stuck at the grommet/hose part at the top. How did you get it up through the first grommet so the wire isn't coming from the outside but the inside? How did you then get it through the hose? Also, when I popped off the second grommet, it was completely sealed on the inside except for the batch of wires that are coming out of it. I'm so confused. I really want to install this for her but I'm about to give up and return it. One more thing, now that I have popped the grommets off, I can't seem to get them back on. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated!

Where does the camera wire go through the tailgate?

The camera wires go into the hatch right there. The rest of the wires I fished up the driver side of the hatch then through the flex wireloom of the hatch into the trunk. Let me tell you. PITA
