3rd Gen V6 front exhaust replacement

Hello, this is my first post and I'm also fairly new to DIY auto repair. I've only ever really done brakes. I have a 2002 4Runner with 225K miles. I've kept it well maintained and it is still extremely reliable.

Recently an exhaust noise coming from the engine bay has gotten too loud. The dealer quoted me over 5K just in parts, to replace pretty much everything in front of the cat. The bulk of that was in two parts they called front pipe 1 and front pipe 2 (or maybe down pipe).

That price seemed ridiculous so I'm thinking of trying this myself. I don't really know where to start. I'm having trouble finding the right DIY threads or videos. I'm not even sure I'm using the right search terms. Would this essentially be a header replacement?

Take a look at this youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/mtbtim65

might be able to find what you need there.

I bet a $1 you will find what you are looking for in this site. Use the google search (easier). There is a ton of information here and a lot of knowledgeable, helpful people.

I recently replaced my exhaust and it was relatively easy. Not sure what piping you are talking about but, whenever I get an expensive quote for anything, I get a second opinion.

Please let us know what end result was. It will teach the rest of us.

That price is beyond ridiculous. You can get some performance headers and replace your entire exhaust for much less than that. There are several threads on 3rd gen headers and exhaust kits. If you go DIY or even get some shop help, you can do it for under $2k for most configs and should manage some modest HP gains. Here's some nice Doug Thorley Headers from LCE for the 5vzfe.

Crawl under there and take a look. Exhaust isn't one of those things that you have to go OEM on or it will fail. Any good brand/config will suffice and most will allow more air flow than stock.
