3VZE Air/Fuel issues

Hi all, first thread. Need a little advice.

I purchased a 1995 4 Runner that has been garaged for 2 years. Replaced engine with a used engine with 40k on it. (3VZE) Replaced avery fluid and filter that can be serviced. All electrical is good and working.

After a couple of weeks of trouble free driving, after the truck was warm, it wouldn't start. I mean, it would labor really hard when it fired and idle really low and the idle would bounce around before stalling. Initially I thought it was parasitic power loss since the AC was on. Turned AC off and it started better and after getting on and off the gas it stayed running, but was very lethargic for first 5 minutes or so.

No problems for about another month. All of a sudden, after running for 15 minutes. Turned it off and went into a store for 15 minutes. Returned and tried to start and same thing?? After getting on and off the gas while cranking it, it stayed running.

I decided to clean the Idle vacuu control valve by spraying carb cleaner into the hole in the bottom of the throttle body. While doing so, I noticed a 4 inch crack in the air intake hose. I imagine the engine was running super lean and as the crack got worse over time, the air/fuel mix curves learned by the computer got way off. I fixed the hose but still running terrible and shifting really erratic. (4WD Automatic).

Is there a way to quickly reset the computers Air/Fuel curves? Or has anyone had a similar experience that can share thoughts? Definitely a do it myself kinda guy and won't go to the dealer unless it is a last resort!!

Try checking the ignition coil... Ive had this issue before and the coil was junk, so I just replaced it and that solved the issue.

The truck now starts and idles like new. Do you still think changing the coil will work? I have the chiltons and will try and test the coil.

The way to reset the computer values , to disconnect the battery for a minute and press the brake pedal( to discharge and remaining energy from the electrical system). And connect it back.

ok, so I replaced the Volume Air Meter and the truck runs like a champ if cold.

But....after it has warmed up and I turn it off, the engine seems to heat soak and will not start if I let it sit for 15-45 minutes.

I checked the resistance on both the ignitor and ignition coils (the one in the distributor and they are right within spec.

I am looking into it being a weak fuel pump and that I may have the wrong gas cap. The one I am using is a cheapy from local auto parts store. Shouldn't even the cheapy be vented? Whenever I remove the fuel cap and put it back on it seems like it wants to start but soon stalls.

Any thoughts??
