4.0L muffler/exhuast

I did a search and didn't see anything or didn't see what I was looking for anyway but I have a question about the 4.0L and how it reacts to muffler swaps or catbacks. My last Toyota was an 04 with the 3.6 and the best mod to do was a dynomax super turbo muffler with stock piping. A tad deeper sound the stock but you wouldn't know it was aftermarket. It really pepped up the truck and if you know the 3.6 in the tacoma, you know it's a pig. It really made it accelerate smoother and with less effort. Has anyone used one on a 4.0L 4runner or tacoma? My 5th gen must not have come with sound insulation cause you can hear a bumble bee outside with my windows up and the radio on so I'm not looking for any drone at ANY rpm.

I know what you mean, i've always done exhaust on all my vehicles! I run a flowmaster 50 series SUV muffler on my 4.0 and ran 2.5 piping all the way back and had it routed out the rear passenger side,also paired with a AFE cold air intake and throttle body spacer. It sound really good, nice and mean at times but not over kill and no drone! I'm very happy with the way it turned out.

My next project is to get a set of Doug Thorley long tube headers and either try to find a aftermarket Y pipe or see if someone can make one for me with aftermarket cats. That way i can have a full exhaust system!

my gibson is slightly drone-y at lower speeds, but i don't spend much time at 10-20 mph so its not a big deal. i have the catback and cold air intake and acceleration is smoother and pedal feel is a little more precise than stock. i recommend both of them, but don't buy them expecting 50hp gains

Beleve me, if anyone knows about real vs advertised hp gains, its me. I've built plenty of hipo mustangs to know what works and what's a gimmic. I'm just looking for real world opinions for what can give a little extra pep in the step.

I would just muffler swap it to a Flowmaster of some kind. I know borlas work well with toyotas. I also have seen the gibson exhaust work well.

In my opinion you should just do a muffler delete straight pipe to get the proper sound of the motor but I know you said that you dont want drone. All of those aftermarket muffers will work its just on how much you wanna spend.

Well I found that borla is really what I'm looking for but I don't want the whole kit. Just the muffler. I just don't know what muffler it is that's in the whole kit.

I think it is the generic turbo muffler that is the 18'' long one but I am not sure

YES! You are correct. I found a few '10-'14 tacomas/FJs on YouTube with that muffler and it seems to be the one. I placed an order for it this evening. Thanx!
