Is $100 a good price for a 1999 rear end with 4.10 gearing that supposedly has 127k miles on it? I thought about buying one and having an arb air system put in it. Thanks everybody

Also is a 4.10 good for an air locker or would a 4.30 be better or does it really even matter? Thanks

The gear ratio has nothing to do with whether or not it is good for an air locker. If you want a locker, throw one in.

The difference between 4.10 and 4.30 is pretty minimal. But what gears you want to run depends on what size tires you have. Also, remember that if you're 4x4, your front diff must be geared the same as the rear.

Thanks man I'm not real big in 4x4ing (just can't afford to tear anything up is the only reason) but I just thought it would be good to have in case I ever was to need it and I was concerned if $100 was good for a plain 4.10 rear end... Thanks again

A locker is the best initial upgrade. Most people go for tires and lift but a locker is the single best upgrade you can make. Go for it!

And yes, $100 is a good price.

FYI-just to cover your butt, ask the selling if the third made any noise before it was removed. Just a good question to ask before buying it.

I think brian2sun was saying that your front needs to be geared the same. If its not when you activate the 4wd the front and back will move at two different speeds, for simplicity. Correcto?

Yeah I'm pretty sure my 99 Limited is 4.10's so I'd have the same ratios by switching a 4.10 with air locker out with my factory one... The guy that has the one for sale swapped his out with 4.30's when he did a suspension upgrade. He said it has 127k miles on it and was as smooth as silk.

It'd be simpler to get an elocker rear axle. Not sure if they made those with 4.10s tho.

Cheaper, too. You can get a factory elocker rear for 600-700, where the ARB is gonna run you a cool grand or so, and you still have to install it.

I agree that an ARB will cost about $1000 and you can get a complete elocked axle for around $700. But, 4.10 elocked runner axles aren't very easy to find. AFAIK, they only came in 5 speeds from '96-'00 and we all know how hard it is to find a manual, elocked 4runner. And don't foget, you still have to wire the elocker in. An ARB is a bit more expensive, but if you want to do it ASAP, it'll probably be the best option. Otherwise an Aussie or a Lockright is another option.

Right. And having to regear the front will also make this project a lot more expensive. At that point he's better off going to 4.88s (or whatever) if he's gonna regear anyways.
