4.30 axles gears or 4.56

hello,
I have read that Limited 4Runners with auto tranny and a rear electric locker have 4.30 gears(T4R buyers guide sticky at the top), however my code states it is 4.56 gearing. I know the best way to confirm might be to turn the tires and count revolutions.

I found a rear axle with a 4.56 electric locker diff for $300 and a front 4.56 diff for $100. I have 285/75/16 tires and 2.5" lift, with front plate bumper, full skids, and rear plate bumper on the way and a trip to AZ coming up in a month. If I in fact have 4.30 gears would you buy the 4.56 diffs and swap them in?

Buy those now. Don't wait, don't reply to this post first, pick up the phone and buy them. If you don't end up using them you can sell them on for a tidy profit. 4.10 elockers alone go for $400-$500 around here, an elocker with housing and matching front diff in 4.56 is probably worth $800-$900.

4.30 to 4.56 is probably not worth the effort to install I don't think, but it's up to you. If you had a five speed I'd say do it, with the auto I'm on the fence. The front diff can be a PITA to drop.

Are you sure they are 4.56? That is a very rare diff ratio, especially with the elocker. I would confirm first before making any purchases. Also as Kid said, for an Auto it might not be a very noticeable jump.

No I am not sure. The guy told me he confirmed it was, but I didn't ask how he confirmed. If he used the code on the door jam then I can see it being wrong. Those codes are not really accurate are they?

I'm not sold on the codes on the door jamb. Only way I would trust it is by counting the teeth. I've heard of guys thinking they were getting a certain ratio and end up with something completely different. Are they local?

From 4.30 to 4.56 you may not feel a major difference, but with your tires I do think you will feel one. I have a friend running 4.88's in his manual 1st gen taco and thinks their to much for highway driving and 33's. I'd love a set of 4.56's (I have 4.10's now) and I know others would not to mention the locker.
If you popped up with a 4.56 front and 4.56 rear w/locker, in good "clean" working condition, phew, man that's serious cash money for those puppies. The guy your potentially buying these from doesn't know what it's worth to someone on here. KidVermicious said it right you shouldn't even be replying if you can confirm their 4.56 you should be on the way to pick them up right now.

Also If you wanted to install the rear 4.56 third and give the locker a lest as well as the ratio it probably wouldn't be to hard and worth the test before you decide to sell or swap it all over.

WoW...400.00 for a E-Locked 4:56 swap...You better be fast, or they WILL be gone...:zoom:

Just for reference, I just paid over 3500 to have 4.56's front and rear with air lockers installed. I'd jump all over that if I were you!

"1) Put your vehicle in 2WD mode and tranny in N.
2) Jack up 1 rear tire off the ground (leave parking brake off)
3) Crawl under the vehicle and put a mark on the driveshaft (tape, paint, marker, etc.) so that you can see and count the rotations of the driveshaft
4) Do the same to the lifted tire and have a friend slowly spin the lifted tire 20 times while you count the number of revelations of the drive shaft."

i agree, I dont want something different. They are 2 hours away

ask him if he know if the diffs came out of a 4cyl/5peed/elocked truck. if they did then they are 4.56's
I think its a limited V6 auto. Bummer if that is the only ones that have the 4.56

I will call him and ask how he verified the ratio and see if I can get some pictures.

I called this morning and they used the VIN to determine what the gear ratio is. How accurate is that? They said they will pull it and check it for me but sounds like that will take a few days.:(

the vin is no different that the door code. you need to have the teeth counted, that is the only way to tell. the door jam code and vin on my 97 said i had 4.10s and when i blew a ring gear in the rear i sourced another 97 v6 auto with the same coding in the door, it had 4.30s and well i never broke anything but it was sketchy to drive in the snow and ice.

I'm thinking the mark on the driveshaft makes 4:1:1 or 4:3:1 or 4:56:1 or 4:88:1 revolutions per one revolution of the mark on the wheel... Mine goes 5:29:1 If you can get a count, just divide the ring teeth by the pinion teeth.

?
i marked my rear driveshaft, marked my tire, logged revs per rev for 20 tire revs, came to 43, i.e. 4.3/1 rear diff for my 99 with e-locker.
the key seems to be doing a full 20 tire rotations for an accurate diff ratio number.
