Not mine... I just know how hard these are to find, I've only seen one other (on craigslist) and that was before I even owned my 4Runner. If I had more of the mod list crossed off I might consider picking this. looking forward to the build tread for the new owner.

Seems a bit pricey for a used unit and no indication of miles on it either. Personally, you can get a brand new setup from URD for a few hundred bucks more. I may be missing something, as I don't follow the market for these. :noidea:

Maintaining or increasing reliability has been my number one goal since starting my build, so boosting isn't too intriguing for me.

price is on the HIGH side, the other one I seen was $2.5k less w/mileage posted. I thought the URD kit was for the VVT-i V8's?

Building and modifying has been my goal with all my builds, having a factory TRD S/C on a 4.7l V8 T4R, appeals me just as much as having a 3.5" LT w/35's.
 
I will take longevity over a performance gain all day long. I generally don't modify my vehicles to far from factory specs.

That's what makes building cars so fun. Where someone's idea of the "prefect" 4runner is keeping it as factory as possible (no lift, maybe roof rack, 265's AT tires) and others think the min. "prefect" 4runner doesn't start till 2.5" 285's. There's no right or wrong way to build YOUR rig, and having all the longevity isn't going to protect your car from the distracted driver that hits you and totals your 15yo + 4runner.

As far as factory specs, isn't a S/C Corvette ZO6, just as much in "factory specs" as a non-S/C Corvette C6? That's why the "factory" TRD supercharger appeals more than just getting a URD kit. My factory specs are long gone from this vehicle (from the 2.5" lift, 285's vs 265's, Non-factory BMC, Non-factory intake, Ungraded radio/speakers, lights, exhaust... the list goes on). My dream car comes factory with 240hp+, I plan to build it/daily drive while building it up to 1000hp. So I might be a little too far on the performance side then longevity. :shrug:

I wouldn't go as far as saying staying within factory spec, however there is a difference between building it and building it right. A lift can be accomplished simply by throwing in a body lift... I see that as the incorrect way of going about it, however if its only to get the "look" and it will never get off the pavement then that is fine.


The distracted driver theory can happen to anyone, at any time, in any vehicle, so I think that is an irrelevant point.


Getting back to "factory spec" though... Short answer is NO... a S/C Corvette ZO6, ISN'T just as much in "factory specs" as a non-S/C Corvette C6. The "supercharged" ZR1 is based on an LS3, which has thicker cylinder walls than that of the "non-supercharged" C6 (LS2) or Z06 (LS7), which was not used block was not used due to the higher cylinder pressures created by the supercharger requiring the thicker cylinder walls of the LS3.


These are things that need to be thought out, as its not a simple as just slapping on force induction and going. How does this relate to the 2UZ? The 2UZ is based off the 1UZ, but instead used in SUVs and trucks. The largest difference between the two engines was the displacement being increased from 4.0L to 4.7L, AND unlike the 1UZ the 2UZ received an iron cylinder block, as opposed to the cylinder block of the 1UZFE is aluminum. This change was done in order to increase reliability with the increased load of an SUV or truck.


Toyota Racing Development offered a bolt-on supercharger kit specific for the 2000–2002 Tundra/Sequoia and the 1998-2002 LX 470. Why wasn't the 2003–2004 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2003-2004 LX 470, 2003-2004 Tundra/Sequoia, 2003–2004 Toyota 4Runner or 2002–2004 Lexus GX 470? Some of which are smaller platforms than those listed as what the TRD kit is specified for.

Going back to engines being designed for higher compression, these revisions were made throughout the life cycle of the 2UZ both before and after VVTi was implemented.

Initial design

230 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm
302 lb-ft @ 3,600 rpm

Minor revisions were added

232 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm
311 lb-ft @ 3,600 rpm

Toyota’s VVT-i system was added

271 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm
315 lb-ft @ 3,400 rpm

Once again, minor revisions were added

282 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm
324 lb-ft @ 3,400 rpm


As you can tell from these numbers, the 2UZFE ended up with 52 more horsepower, and 22 lb-ft more than it started with. The largest jump occurred when Toyota added VVT-i, which added an impressive 49 horsepower. These numbers don't just come out of tuning... components are replaced internally, change of materials, compression, etc.


I will be upfront and say I don't have exact information stating the revisions completed to achieve these numbers, however I think we can all agree Toyota as a company is extremely conservative, especially back in these years and one can only conclude that the only approved or recommended the TRD kit be put on the vehicles that had the necessary internal specifications to deal with the higher compression over long term use.


Otherwise why didn't they make it applicable to all 2UZ platforms?

Is this supercharger the only option available for non-VVTI V8’s?

As far as I’ve ever found, this is the only game in town for the older ones. I go back and forth on these, but I’d probably only get one if it was new in box, or had verified low mileage and had EVERYTHING it originally shipped with. It would be fun having one, but if I’m honest with myself, it would be a waste of money since this truck is fairly quick with the things I’ve done to it already, and it’s not a muscle car/sports car. I will save the supercharging for my toy cars, one of which already rocks a 2.3l Whipple twin screw pushing 18psi.:bounce:

It’s a struggle for sure.. definitely not the best use of money. I’ve been watching these 4WD’ers from Australia and the sound their older supercharged Toyota’s make is just:

I love my 04 V8, but I am still jealous VVTI-i model years got that extra HP and increased redline.

If you don’t have a Sprint Booster yet, definitely consider getting one. It takes all of the sluggish throttle response out so it makes the truck feel faster because it responds as it should. You can tune it to your own comfort level which is a nice feature. A bit pricey, but I’d say the best bang for the buck of any mod performance wise on this truck. Having the right exhaust helps with the whole experience too. I have headers, and TRD stainless dual exhaust and absolutely love the sound, not obnoxious, but definitely turns heads when I get on it!:dancin:
 
The fact that you would have to run a unichip and in my case learn/experiment with it is the major factor besides the money and unknown mileage of the unit in the ad.
The iron block of the 2UZed makes it able to handle the boost, but the rods were suspect from what I've read. I guess people with Tundras were pumping the boost a little and some had rod failures, which is why Toyota discontinued the TRD SC, but I have no first hand knowledge.

Then of course there was the whole debate of whether the domestic 2UZ had a weaker rod than the Japanese produced 4Runner or Lexus/LCs. But I've never read any definitive proof of that. There are beefed up aftermarket rods that can be purchased, but there again, how much do you want to spend on a rolling brick.

I've echoed this point a lot, but the fact that so many soccer moms and retirees still own these trucks, with not one iota of interest in performance, is one reason why you don't see too many of these things with HP mods.

Personally I would do it in a minute if I had the disposable income, and [MENTION=162495]Charles4x4[/MENTION] is my hero for what he accomplished at KOH. There are other bad asses such as [MENTION=130999]Inv4drZm[/MENTION], who have gone way past the usual build out that impresses the shit outta me too. But between the Sprint Booster with DT headers and Y pipe, my 03' is pretty quick. It just needs a locker w 4:56s and it would be closer to beast mode like I want it. In 4 low it will jump into the rev limiter really quick as it sits right now, so it's pretty fun.

A really cool experiment would be to take two of these trucks and do one with a N/A performance build and the other with a SC build, and see how the budgets and power gains/reliability would compare. But with a major lack of knowledge and money on my part, it's just a pipe dream. Unfortunately the LS is still King of that realm. The GM parts were always the budget racer/Hot Rodders go to build when I was a kid in the 70s and they pretty much still are.

I’ve got DT shorties and a MF cat-back, and I was going to get the Unichip which I can select pre-tuned for headers/cat-back. Now I’m wondering if the Unichip will also tighten the throttle response like Sprint Booster does?

Unfortunately I know squat about the unichip. The naysayers have called them snake oil, but I can't confirm that one way or another. From what I have read the Toyota ECU is a tough system to crack/manipulate.

If you make the plunge, please keep us posted as I would like to learn more about tuning in general. You could fit what I know about it in a match box, other than changing out spark plugs and reading a few things about fuel trims online. I could possibly get a little more out of mine because from what I can tell the headers have the fuel trims running rich for the added overall flow of air. I would get a dongle and start using the Torque pro app or get a scan guage system as well.

You could also hit Gadget from URD up with an email and see what he thinks is possible.

I don’t know much about the Unichip, but what I liked about the SB was it doesn’t alter the tuning of the engine at all, just modifies the signal of the drive by wire system to make it respond properly. I also like that it can be changed on the fly to accommodate different driving styles, or tuned to a valet mode so your vehicle won’t get beat on if you have it serviced or parked by someone else. Sounds like you have some decent mods already, so cleaning up the responsiveness should get you the rest of the way. When I got the truck, I was convinced that it NEEDED to be supercharged or something because it felt too sluggish for what I felt a v8 should be, and after reading many threads on the subject, even though I was still skeptical, I pulled the trigger during a sale from Jason B. After the install, I played with the settings, and tried a different one every day until I found the sweet spot for my driving style. It’s been a long time since I messed with it, and the controller is hidden in the fuse area, so I can’t remember what I settled on (I can check later), but I think it was red 5. Probably too aggressive for off-roading, but just how I like it for street driving. Bottom line is that I no longer feel like it’s underpowered/sluggish, or NEEDS a supercharger. Not saying it wouldn’t be a cool accessory “just because”, but I no longer feel it’s necessary.
