4.7L TRD supercharger nose drive change

Hi all,

Just want to post a thread for info of changing 4.7L TRD supercharger nose drive assembly.

I have a 2003 4.7L 4runner with TRD supercharger which I have recently swapped the nose drive since it was leaking. I had about 65k miles on the supercharger, there was no drivability issue. Apparently, every 60-80k miles, the lubricating oil in the nose drive should be changed, and you have the option to swap out the nose drive also.

It was difficult to find info for the 4.7L supercharger. A lot more info of the supercharger for the 3rd gen 4runner. Hence, this post to help out others in the same boat.

TRD actually sells a nose drive assembly kit. Part number : 00602-17620-471 (PTR01-34040-47)
(This apply to supercharger for 2003-04 4runner, 2000-04 Tundra, 2001-04 Sequoia, 1998-04 Land Cruiser)

I got it from Partznet for $220 with shipping. The kit contained the nose drive, oil, phenolic drive, loctite gasket.

Here is the cover page of the instruction. I cannot upload the entire instruction since it is over 2mb. PM me if anyone interested in getting the entire pdf file.

My buddy and I took 2 days (few hours/day) to get the job done. He did most of the work though :)

More pics.

Supercharger taken off, rags covering the intake. Took about 2-3 hrs to take off the charger.

Back of the nose drive, showing the phenolic adaptor, which is a part that is replaced with the new nose drive assembly.

New nose drive installed. You can see the opening where oil is put in then a screw plug is placed afterwards.

Great right up...How long have you had the supercharger and is your engine stock? Where did you get it?

My ride is a 2003 4.7L V8.

Added the supercharger in 2006 when I had around 40k miles.

It was kind of difficult to find as by that time, TRD already pulled it off the shelf. Fortunately, while browsing on the internet, came across one of the dealership in California and they actually had 2 left. I got it around $3k.

I had my local dealer installed it so the warranty of the supercharger will extend to the powertrain warranty of the car, which was 60k miles. Now, I am off warranty. Have already 65k miles on the supercharger, so far without any major problem other than very slow oil leak from nose drive. Definitely no rods bending/blowing. As you can see, this is the first major maintenance with the nose drive swap.

In terms of the engine, it is stock other than the supercharger. I did change the piggyback ECU. I ran the supercharger for 3-4 years with the TRD piggyback ECU. Then I switched it to unichip, which is running smoother than TRD's. Before with TRD, I felt throttle response tends to have slight lag and then the power will kick in and screamed like a mad ape. Now, the throttle response much more instantaneous and the power band, smoother.

URD also make fuel management module that can work with the TRD supercharger. You can even do your own tuning.

The 4.7 V8 4runner is listed to have 235 hp and 320 ft lbs torque.

I believed that the supercharger adds more hp than torque. Probably around 70-80 hp, so now the rig is probably around 300-320 hp, 350-360 ft lbs torque.

Power band is towards the lower revs, so quite useful for daily driving and towing.

MY nose was seeping a little after I installed my supercharger so I went back to the tech who installed it. He recommended I pulled th screws out and put a dab of gasket sealer on each and retorque. Haven't had a problem since (about 30K miles ago), but I plan to do this sometime soon as I approach 100K (but I'm only at 70K, haha).

Nice to see a fellow 'charger' out there!

Hi T4RUSAF,

Yes, great to see another fellow charger.

TRD also sell a oil change kit if you don't need to change the entire nose drive. It has the oil, locktite gasket and phenolic adaptor minus the nose drive.

Before I changed the nose drive, I did not notice any drivability issue. But since I changed to a new nose drive, both my GF and I were commenting that now the engine sounds even more quiet and smooth.

Who knows whether it is because now the charger has new nose drive or new oil that is making the difference.

Cheers.

So, I'm really interested in your FI management setup now that you've taken off your TRD piggyback. I kept mine just like you did for the sake of warranty, but my warranty finally ran out this past august. So is the unichip worth it? How much and what type of tuning did you do after purchase? How long have you had it in?

I have taken the "set it n' forget it" approach with the supercharger in hopes nothing went wrong. Well, 40K miles later I'm still runnin' strong! But, I knew from the beginning that the piggyback isn't the best solution by any means.
