I have a 2006 4runner and I cant seem to engage it in 4low? It just keeps beeping at me and flashing. Is there certain steps I must follow? I don't have a manual... I have a 2001 4runner also and it works great.

In the 4th gen (automatic locking hubs) the truck has to be moving to engage 4wd. Make sure you are in 4wd high first, then shift to neutral, and apply the brakes (or make sure the vehicle is stopped), then switch to 4 lo. It should only take a few seconds to engage.

I am not sure if you need to be moving 100% of the time, I know I have turned mine on while not moving.

Just make sure you are stopped and in neutral before you try to put it in 4wd Lo.

I think the V8's have to be stopped and in neutral to engage 4 lo. I'd go out and check the manual, but things may have changed since I bought mine in '03. Also, corona didn't say which engine he had in his '06.

The 4R does not have auto locking hubs on either the v6 or v8. They are always connected and turn with the wheels ( half shafts ) and the front drive shaft. The T case selector only engages or disengages the transfer case .

Either vehicle (v6 or v8) needs to be stopped and put in neutral , then switched to 4lo. Same procedure to disengage.

The T-Case selector engages the front driveshaft of the transfer case, and also engages the half-shafts to the front differential. The hubs are permanently locked and the front halfshafts always rotate, but they are NOT connected to the differential unless in 4h.

Yes , thats correct.

It is missing, I figured it out you must be stopped and then switch to 4 low. If you are moving at all and switch to 4low and then stop it will not work..

Once you register and sign in go to the "My Owners Manual" section . In the "search" block choose "owners manual" and put in a word or phrase for what you are looking for. It is configured for the vehicle you register. After a while you can see the format that brings up the various chapters of the manual in Adobe PDF format. I downloaded all the chapters and pieced them together with some shareware software. Just takes a little time and forethought..

So if the hubs are permanently locked, why does the vehicle have to be moving to engage 4wd? Instead of locking the hubs, it connects the half shafts? Weird. I just learned something new on here again!

Thanks for the feedback. This sounds like a pain. Why is it you can easily get a PDF manual for a $20 radio and not for an $30,000 car.:bash: Sorry to get off topic.

Not really off topic as this helps "corona" ,initial poster, who has no manuals or instruction cards.

Well you don't want to be on the gas ( like if your stuck and tires spinning ) and engage 4wd hi , as it will slam the center diff. into 4wd . ( unless they have a overide that it can't happen ) .

An example was years ago when the first Ford Explorer came out. Which DID have electronic transfer case and electronic front locking hubs ( also available in manual) and people would be spinning the tires and hit the engage button at a high slipping spin and literally rip the front axle to shreds . Not to mention the system sucked and they had many problems with it anyway.
