I will get dates as soon as we have teams... I already have 2 committed for team 3rd gen, and none from team 5th gen.
any 4th gens want in on team 5th gen??
and remember, I am on the recovery team, my 4runner is far from stock. Im just trying to stir the pot.. We had so much passion from the 5th gens that they had the better offroad capable vehicle on that thread last night. I was just trying to solve the issue with a real life fun challenge...
I really didnt think Thai would be right about anything, let alone that the 5th genners wouldnt want to take their new rides up on trails! thats what they were built for! :thumb3:
Dont misunderstand me at all, I love ALL the 4runners, I just thought some 5th gen backers (I wont even say owners) have really bought into some unproven hype(yes I know it "ran" the rubicon trail) call me skeptical, i want to see it in action, plus this gives a great opportunity for alot of different people to get together in a beautiful state and have some fun!

I think that most of the 5th Gen owners are fans of the 3rd gen. I nearly bought a 3rd gen in the fall (2000 4WD black 78k miles). It is difficult to find one in that good of shape these days, but they wanted $12k for it. I couldn't spend that much money on what was a 10 year old vehicle.
When the 5th gen came out, I loved the look and the improvements in fuel economy made it a viable family/adventure/utility vehicle. Plus, I see a lot of the 3rd gen styling in the new 5th gen. It has that boxy, bulky look. Seeing as I plan to get 15~20 years out of this, the increased cargo area, updated safety and comfort features, the extra $20k for a 5th versus a 3rd made sense because I can actually use the 5th as a primary vacation and family vehicle. The 3rd, sadly, just doesn't cover my family needs as well as the 5th due to size, safety, and age.
And, god yes, a 3rd gen T4R is preferred to any SUV w/ the "GM mark of excellence", IMO.

Wait 2-3 years and "call out" these same folks with the 5th gen, you will get a lot more participation. This call out of 5th gen just months after it was introduced is just sad for the 3rd gen side. Sorry, if you guys take a step back and think about this "challenge," then you will see what i mean. Hey, why don't you call out the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners too while you're at it?!!
I am afraid that in 2-3 years, the 5th gen owners will have more experience with their vehicles and will gladly take on ANY 3rd gen, modified or not. My prediction.The bottom line is that, spec vs. spec (aka stock vs. stock, or modified vs. modified), the 5th gen 4runner is a more capable off-road vehicle than the 3rd gen 4runner. It is an evolved vehicle. It is like the modern Jeep Rubicon vs. a stock CJ. Just like in the other thread, you guys canNOT come up with a definitive answer as to why you guys think a 3rd gen is superior to the 5th gen off-road. All i hear are vague "kill stories" and this-that. Specs don't lie. The fact that you guys go this length to prove the 5th gen's weakness proves that you guys are scared to death that i am right.

what about my entire argument with you...i'm pretty sure i provided specs and pretty good reasons about what i believe and why i believe it.
i am not scared of any 5th gen showing me up. if they do, then good for them. but until a 5th gen owner steps up to the plate, neither you nor i can say that one is better that the other. we can only guess

What argument? Using bogus Toyota specs? That one? :lol: You can't lie about KDSS, A-TRAC, raw power, crawl ratio, disc brakes, etc..
I predict that the next response i get from the 3rd gen crowd (esp. the open diff ones): "4runners are built, not bought!" :jump: I remember seeing this same exact exchange from the CJ crowd when the Jeep Rubicon was introduced in 2003.

Ric, sure it's the driver. Is this challenge or the previous thread about Thegreenmonster vs. Seattlemike in a death match of driving skills?? No. These two recent threads are about 5th gen 4RUNNER (as in the actual vehicle) vs. 3rd gen 4RUNNER (as in the actual vehicle).
Talk all you want about driver and driving skills, i agree 100%, but this is NOT what we're discussing. Know it all or not, i at least know how to read and discuss relevant stuff, ric. :redbrick:

This is all excuses... I know plenty of people with new trucks expensive ones too that would wheel and destroy them, we are talking much simpler stuff...

and Yes, specs do Lie, thats my point, the 3rd gen is a proven off road vehicle, We have yet to see if "THE HYPE" has anything to it! the specs/Stats showed that Eric Lindros was the next Gretzky til he wasnt!!
they give you all these fluffy stats and say your atrac is going to do this and that and this and that for you and how often is it rubbish?!?!
I still know people that Disco their ABS cuz this "great" technology never truly delivered in all circumstances and I cringe when my ABS engages at stupid times, like when I hit that one pothole right as Im slowing down for the light right by Go Toyota... How hyped was ABS? super Hyped, did it deliver? Yes, to a point, but it wasnt ALL THAT and a bag of chips like they said it was gonna be...
lets cool our heads a bit and slow down with this 5th gen is the greatest of al time talk until its got a season or two under its belt to play with the big dog...
So guess what, your little rant proved my point... 5th genners seem to be scared to wheel their rigs INSPITE OF ALL the Atrac HYPE and all the other hype, that they are supposed to have the superior vehicles doesnt seem to be setting in with the owners...
I HOPE to be proved wrong here in the long run, cuz I know 3rd Gens cant be around for forever, I am gonna need a next vehicle and I hope its claims are true, I simply set up a challenge for the current owners to prove it since people like you THAI are so adamant that the 5th gen is better. I could honestly care less if it is... IT SHOULD BE BETTER, but that has not been proven yet so get off your high horse about stats/specs that mean ZERO to the real world.

i like how you are trying to compare my sr5 with no off road options of any kind to a Trail with KDSS and a locker. guess what Thai, the KDSS and locker are optional.
i'll make a bet with you. a 99 3rd gen highlander with the rear locker will out wheel mine.

Actually, A-TRAC, KDSS, disc brakes, etc. are all proven for years now off-road. A-TRAC...just stroll over to the FJ Forum...plenty of hardcore off-roaders there swear by it! KDSS...i believe that this is a technology from Australia and is a proven technology for off-roading. Disc brakes are obvious, esp for water fording and durability. Crawl ratio is also obvious to a seasoned off-roader.
When was ABS ever designed for off-roading?? Do you have something to back up what you said? ABS is a purely on-road safety technology. It was NOT designed for "all circumstances." This is why Toyota introduced multi-terrain ABS system back in 1999 for the Land Cruiser. BTW, the 5th gen 4runner has this same multi-terrain ABS system that you have in the Land Cruiser. This means that when off-roading, ABS system senses uneven terrain and will intervene less and allow you to lock up your wheels (to some degree of course). YOUR 3rd gen 4runner has the ordinary on-road ABS system that won't let you lock up your tires off-road. So, yeah, YOU should be concerned about ABS while off-roading, while the 5th gen owner does not. Cool, thanks helping me find another advantage of the 5th gen over the 3rd gen!!

Ok, you can insall an ARB rear locker...so, i think that a rear locker should be mandatory if a Trail Edition shows up. There, that should make you happy.

ok this is getting old. if any 5th gen owners want to wheel in CO, pm and i will be happy to go on a run with you. i would actually love to see what one can do on the trail.
i'm done with arguing with a 4runner know-it-all who doesn't actually own a 4runner and daily drives a minivan.
