Ok, in response to this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/general-discussions/63599-3rd-gen-vs-5th-gen.html

Which I knew was going to turn into a whoever is better offroad wins! :biggrin2: and I was right!

I thought of this ingenious challenge to see once and for all which stock vehicles are the most capable off road! I mean, ultimately we know that all those "comforts" that the 5th Gen owners talk about really make them weak anyways, and their seats wont be as comfortable when they are upside down in a ditch trying to follow a 3rd gen 4runner thru the mountains!

So, the challenge is just like H-O-R-S-E but with 4-Runner... you get the idea, best 2 out of 3 wins...
For those that dont remember, when you played horse versions of anything, the one person does something with their rig and the next person has to emulate it or it gets a 4... and so on so forth.

Anywhere from 4-7 different stock 3rd and 5th gen vehicles and drivers can make up a team.

We do this in Colorado, the true test of a man and vehicle are found in the Rocky mountains! Plus, Im here and plan on video taping this feat so that all can see that cool little expensive toys dont mean squat on the mountain...

there must be stock 3rd gens with lockers participating and trail edition 5th gens so NO ONE can use that as an excuse,

the fact that we run several different drivers and rigs will mean that no One vehicle or driver decides the outcome. eliminates those drivers with "Mad Skillz"

any takers??
any other rules that you can think of?
how about any trails that have lots of obstacles to work with??

I guess we could allow a team of 4th gens...

Ultimately, though, I think this will prove to "little baby brother" that Big Brother still wears the pants in the family! :biggrin2:

AHHH!!!! I would LOVE to be there to represent the 4th Gens!! I dont have an exact date but ill be in CO sometime in september so Im guessing ill miss this event. Ric, You better push your rig to the limits because I know the ATRAC will win :lmao:
 
Oh better yet, why don't you guys hold this competition at the Rubicon Trail?? I would love to see a video of that!

Rics rig will not be eligible, Neither will mine... We will be there to pull all the 5th gens out when they get stuck...

lets call us, The recovery team! :lookout: this is for stock vehicles

I think the only offroad mod that will be allowed will be removal of running boards, obviously this has nothing to do with addition of LED or anything like that. but this also brings a good point,
we need to make a list of mods that are allowed as "stock"

Rics Toytec suspension will not make that list :0)

maybe add stock size MT tires, because IMO both gens won't go far

:iagree: Good call. Stock vs. stock would be the fairest way for this competition. I would say maybe just upsized, AT or MT tires as another "allowed" mod. My two cents.

If modded 4Runners are in the challenge, then it just adds to complication of setting a budget that was spent to mod it and/or degree of modification to create another criteria or class of 4Runners in that generation. IMO too much work.

So this comes down to "I can squeeze between these trees in my skinny 3rd Gen" vs. "I can climb this hill without touching the gas pedal in my 5thGen", right?

well, climbing a hill without a gas pedal is not really a feat... getting the 4runner to accomplish something and then having the other 4runner accomplish the same feat is the goal.

so I would say that the skinny tree thing is an advantage on a trail, whether or not you hit the gas pedal is not. cuz either way the throttle is letting gas in and the car is moving.

I definitely think that if a 4runner accomplishes something but breaks a part then they have lost the challenge, the goal is to not reward breaking stuff...


Oh, and Ric cant drive anybody elses vehicles either! He could prob put a Geo metro in some of the same places with 2wd! :biggrin2:

Are you telling me a 3rd Gen will climb a hill without the driver touching the gas? Can it go back down the same hill without the driver touching the brakes?

As for doing anything without touching a brake or gas pedal not being a feat... the point is that my "stock" 5th gen has an advantage: Crawl Control. Going between two trees isn't really a feat either.

As for your "teams" idea, give it up. The only fair test is to have the SAME driver run comparably outfitted vehicles over the SAME course and provide an unbiased opinion. They have to be running the SAME tires in OEM stock size, no lift, no aftermarket gear (winches, bull bars, rock sliders, etc.), on a course they both can complete.
 
Geez,this is just for fun and we don't need a scientific test for this and it's not like this challenge is the last word between 3rd and 5th gens. We have plenty of stock friendly trails that we can choose from also.

And he did state that it has to be stock out side of the tire size which you are limited on both gens of what will fit. It'll be a fun comparo and fun to do but it might be hard to find several people with 5th gen willing to compete.

Seattlemike,if you lived here would you do the challenge?
