4 Runner quandry

Geeez, what's all this concern over binding? So the wheel slips. Worst case, you might have to back up a bit when you drop 4-Hi to 2 to equalize the loads and get the system to unlock. I still have yet to buy a 4Runner, but after 14 years with an F150 that frequently gets put into tight turns when 4-Hi is engaged (I live up a very steep, long and winding driveway), I've never had a failure, or even close to it. Plenty of binding in my life... I'm sure I've fatigued the system a bit, but he margins should still be significant. If they're not on a Toyota...

Your resident engineer is correct that a design case should be wheel slippage. Funny though, I always thought it was the static coefficient of friction (mu sub s)... times the normal force then of course times the radial distance for the individual wheel for the torque... but I would think that an even worse design case would be a good off-road event of trying to get over a big rock... running up onto it with wheel spinning. The dynamic shock loads could be pretty significant... just look at all the axles and stuff that people break off-roading.

Your vehicles are meant to be used... not kept as museum pieces!
