4 Runners in the white stuff

I had a slight butt puckering moment last week. Went to the local state park in the mountains with 3 buddies after we did some target shooting. Roads were covered by 3-4in of snow in some areas and packed down in some. Some ice/frozen mud in some areas...we were heading down a 200ft long hill that had some ice on it but wasn't very steep. Big ,but not huge, ditch on the right....100+ft drop off with scattered trees on the right. I'm doing about maybe 10mph just cruising along, not on the gas on break in 4hi all electronic nannies on when all of a sudden the front end kicks right and before i even touched the brakes we are heading to ditch. Now we are just about totally perpendicular with the road and lucky for us soon as the front end hit the untouched snow just off the side of the road it came to a stop. My buddy in the passenger seat who has a good bit of offroading experience, lot more than me, goes "you probably shouldn't have hit the brakes" i said umm i never touched them not even to stop. I guess it even though i had it in manual mode and 2nd gear, It may have downshifted and just lost traction on the ice...idk.
We didn't have single other issue. After that i put it in 4lo and the KDSS in the 1st setting and was fine. Didn't even slide coming back up that same hill

If you are going downhill and start getting sideways, you want to use the throttle to regain directional control. You are going down the hill whether you like it or not, turning tires are more influential on your path than stopped tires.

Oh I know.....I I never hit either and honestly it was like the back end locked up for a quick second, Idk if it was the abs/traction control/trans downshifting but I would have rather went into the ditch than the 100+ft drop off. The ditch I know I could eventually, with some maneuvering drive out of.
