4 Wheel Drive light keeps flashing

Hey Guys,

I had a problem the other day after some heavy off roading. A load of warning lights came on related to traction control and such. From the DTC codes this was traced to a bad speed indicator cable that got stretched. Found others on the forum who had the same issues that pointed me in the right direction.

I fixed that and all looked good but now the 4 wheel drive green indicator is continuously flashing. I've plugged into a Techstream and there are no DTC codes.

There are some numbers in the calibration column as follows:

Engine and ECT - 33580100

Cruise Control - A0C01000

ABS/VSC/TRAC - F152635041

Not sure if if this is saying calibration of these systems is required or something.

Any ideas?

Had problem on my 3rd gen, it was a front diff sensor, tried the ole figure 8 trick it wouldn't work lol.

I read about that trick. Just tried it and also drove about 15 miles and didn't fix it for me either. I did realize I'm actually stuck in 4WD. Switching to low works just fine but nothing for H2.

With some 4WD systems backing up 10-20 ft while in 2WD will release a sticky 4WD. This was actually required on my old Explorer, don't know if it works for T4R but worth a try.

Well....eventually gave up trying to fix it myself and took it down to the dealer. It was due for the 10,000 service anyway.

They did the service and reckoned they could not replicate the 4WD problem and that 'everything was working as designed'. I picked it up, drove 10 yards, put it into 4L and green light came straight on blinking away. They obviously hadn't even tried it.

I took it straight back in and this time the foreman came over and drove around the block with me. He had a word with the guy that told me it was fixed behind closed doors, apologized and booked it straight back in.

Got a call back the next day and they found the actuator was faulty. Which was what i asked them to check when I took it in!!! Anyway, part on order and I should have it back next week.

What model is your 4r? Ltd,trail,sr5. I'm assuming a Ltd.

Good news....got it back. The repair was $650 and was all covered under warranty. I bought the platinum 7 year online for $750....not sure if that covered it or just the existing drivetrain.

Does it say what part was repaired/replaced on your bill? I want to compare the price of the parts to see if this could be a DIY repair if anyone else runs in to a similar issue. Thanks.

Actually total cost was almost $675.

It's a little tricky to read but here's what I think are the part numbers and description.

1x 90430-18008 - Gasket $0.93
2x 08885-02106 - G-super 75-90 $35.46
1x 00295-01281 - F.I.P.G., trans $13.67
1x 41400-35032 - Actuator Assy, Diff $227.41
1x 90430-24003 - Gasket $1.07

The rest was labor.

Changing back and fore between 2WD and 4WD is now pretty much immediate. It used to take 10-20 second driving slowly before it would engage. I do get a bit of grinding though when using the shift lever.

Looks like T-SB-0066-12 is applicable from a post I read on the Tacoma Forum.
