4500 Mile Update

I cant' believe I put that many miles on it already but I guess that's about average since January. The fit & finish on this truck is much better than I ever anticipated. I did have some issues recently which I plan to have the dealer address;

1. Most major, I recently switched to 4 High and heard a disturbing thumping sound from the front wheels. Every other second it would thump while trying to engage 4 wheel. I was doing about 25 mph and the dash light just blinked away. I shut it off, gave it 15 seconds and turn it back to 4H. This time no thumping but it still wasn't engaging, the dash lights just blinked, I slowed to 15 mph and it engaged fine. No problems from that point on. I tried yesterday and it worked fine and engaged in about 4 secs which is faster than its ever done!

2. My seat squeaks around corners!! I'm not heavy by any means so it's weird... and annoying. Seems to have started since the weather warmed up.

3. Cold engine start, there's a belt or something in the engine that squeaks until it warms up. It's done this since day one but now I have the windows down so I hear it and therefor, it annoys me :D .

That's it. I hope #1 isn't serious. Maybe because I haven't used 4x4 since the last snow fall, about a month, the gears wern't oiled up enough.

4500 miles

Gues what I have the exact same problems. There is a tsb on the seats, had mine done fixed the problem. As far as the belt noise go's I have had two belts replaced and a tentioner, see my post under warranty. Toyota finally called and said they have a fix. We will see. Anyway I filed for relief under Md's Lemon Law. That woke them up...They have one more shot..

not bad neech :)

as for #1: the best way to ensure to keep your 4x4's longevity, stop and put it in neutral and then put it in 4wd (hi/lo). Yes I know it's suppose to be shift on fly but heck do remember that parts do wear out faster when they are "moving". Also make sure you're on flat level ground and going straight. Cuz anything else and it'll have problems switching in and out of 4wd.

dunno about #2 as I guess I'm lucky not to have this problem. Must be my radio being too loud! (hehe :D)

#3? since you have the v6 I dunno. Your 4runner is chain driven so I'm guessing it's prob something else thats making the noise. Maybe a loose belt tensioner for your a/c & p/s? (not sure, dunno what your underside of the hood looks like).

Should I be doing a 8250 mile update for everyone? mine drives like a charm! :) bummer that it's a gas loving engine! hehe

You have the TSB number by chance?

4500 mile check

orry I don't have the TSB but if you call Bill Kidds Toyota in MD theyt can help, there are two TSB on this. They are a very good dealer and the service mDoug has gone way out of his way to help., but sometimes the builder needs to step in. 410-666-8900

Update

I had the service done and they're ordering parts. Tension belt and pully and the part for the recall. So I'll be making another trip this week.

When I got it back, the engin noise sounded awful but over the weekend it nearly stopped.

I dont know. I went to NJ this weekend w/o a problem and the seat doesn't squeak now either, even tho they didn't hear anything.

Thump

Manual says you should drive in 4X4 at least every month to lube the components. I always had a glitch in my '02 when engaging 4H from any speed. I traded for a full-time '03.
