4Lo - newbie question on driving in 4Lo

I'm a first time T4R owner - a '04 V8 4wd, have had it for about 3 weeks now.

I put it into 4Lo (shift to N, click the button to "4Lo"), the light indicating 4Lo stays on...so far no issue.

When I shift to "D" the car really wants to move forward, I feel like I need to apply more brakes to stop it, I assume this is normal (feeling more torque, right)?

When I accelerate (normal, not stomping on it), the car seems to shift through the gears pretty quickly until I hit 35 MPH, then the Tach just climbs up to about 3500 - is this right?

Last night I was taking the trash out at around 11pm...and we finally got a little bit of snow! (A pitiful 2-4 inches maybe) Well, suffice it to say after seeing this nice fresh stuff that the snow plows hadn't ruined yet (Does everyone else get all sad and upset when they clear the roads like I do??) I decided to hop in the new 4Runner and test out some features I hadn't gotten a chance to test out! Wiggled it a bit around on the snowy roads, handles pretty nicely even with the stock tires, maybe I'm just too mellow in my old age? Locked the center diff for a little bit, then tried out 4-Low (Diff unlocked) Wow, that was surprising how it really wanted to just GO when I shifted into drive! And the shifting thru gears at such a slow speed was interesting as well...All in all it was a good experience. My 4Runner will only see light offroad use and some snow, and the normal daily commute so I thought it would be a good idea to take that opportunity to familiarize myself with how the systems behaved. Very glad I did! My wife didn't quite get it when I climbed into bed and asked her to wake up and lets go driving in the snow....pffft, oh well!
 
I did exactly the same thing tonight here in NH - you have to work hard to get the car to slide around.

I did notice in the snow that the brakes are so strong that you can easily over-do it when slowing down, best to keep a light foot when braking in the snow.

At one point, accelerating around a turn trying to get it to slide the VSC indicator light was flashing and began beeping at me, as if it was saying "get your foot off the gas already".

Make sure that you shift to "N", then mode the dial to L4, wait until the 4LO indicator light stops flashing, then shift back in to "D". Try that and then see what happens.

Before you switch to "D", make sure you have your foot FIRMLY on the brake or you'll creep forward! :)
 
Thanks for the help fellas. Salesman told me just to keep it in 4HI. Idiot didn't even want to explain things to me and still hasn't given me the owner's manual he promised me or the Navigation instruction book.

It's awesome that you're choosing to learn about it, so many don't and it ends up costing them.

Do understand that while driving on the road it's best to NOT USE the diff lock unless you're stuck in a parking spot or something. The diff lock turns off the vehicle stability control(VSC) and the vehicle will not "help" should it begin to slide.:cool:
 
I just finally did it today. Locked the differential, threw it on 4LO. Felt strange but I had to find out. I read today that the Torsen Limited-Slip Center Differential engages in three distinct situations and the locking feature can be selected by the driver to redistribute torque manually.
