4Runner 5th Gen Sales

I wish Toyota would advertise the 4Runner, even a little bit. I have never seen a 5th gen 4Runner commercial on TV, ever. I see Wrangler and Grand Cherokee commercials all the time. I bet if Toyota wanted to sell more 4Runners, they could do with with a little more advertising, such as 4Runners ripping through mud, dirt, water, etc. like the Jeep commercials do. My girlfriend admitted to never even knowing a 4Runner existed before meeting me, and she loves it and wants one now. IMO, people who think off road think Jeep, or maybe Xterra, both of which I have seen adds on TV. They had 4th gen commercials which made the truck look bad@ss, like the one where it is an untamed beast and the guy smashes the window to get in and drive it, or the one where it's driving through the rough mountain terrain, etc. Those were great. I would love to see Toyota advertise the 5th gen more.

FWIW, the 4Runner is still strangely selling to people that should prefer the Highlander. There are 3 other 5th gen 4Runners within a mile of my house. All 3 are driven by middle age women and I'm certain that 2 of the three have probably never seen a gravel road. The one is at least generally dusty. :lol: So, if we were looking at people that really want a truck based SUV for the practical use of a truck based SUV, I'd be the only one of the four. The other three like the rugged look and image that the 4Runner portrays. Other than my couple offroading trips a year, most would and could accuse me of the same. I did pull a tree down with my 4Runner this weekend, god dammit. :lol:

Same can be said of the 4Runner. The vast majority of 4Runners never leave the pavement, just like the GC. It's more about image than anything else.

Anyone know the sales numbers for the 2011 & 2012 GC?

I'll man up and admit I bought the black Limited because it looks bad a$$ and I like the masculinity of it. New vehicles are getting softer every day, and I didn't like the thought of driving the same crossover as my parents/random soccer moms/people that would rather text than drive (since they are all starting to look frighteningly similar). I do deal with some horrible winters in Calgary but I could easily survive those in a crossover, and some of the traffic snarls we get call or hopping curbs to escape.

Also, I like being prepared for emergencies b/c I never want to be stuck which is the other reason I bought it.

Seriously, the lack of advertising is so strange. I meet people that love the new 5th gen, but there is no exposure at all!

Toyota does not need to make more 4runners. I was listening to XM radio the other day and they were talking the the president of Audi about some new model they had out and was hard to get. The interviewer asked him why they do not step up production. The Audi president said ultimately they would build one less than what the customers demanded. This way they could keep the price high as they would always be in demand. Toyota kind of does this with 4runners. They do not flood the market with them which would lower the price and hurt used values. This seems to be how they build trail editions. Limit supply so that they do not have to discount the price.

Honestly, it doesn't take much to upset the apple cart around here. Some of these 5th gen owners are so oversensitive that I think they might have sand in their vag.....oh, never mind. Anyway, if anyone goes back and reads my words from the beginning, they'll realize that I never said anything negative about the 5th gen 4Runner. Despite what I've been accused of saying, I never said it was ugly, poorly built, or even that it should have had better sales numbers. All of those things were claimed by the 5th gen owners who are so touchy that they can't read straight. LOL

Over sensitive? Yes, often. But they are passionate and enthusiastic about their trucks and they tend to be a good bunch of folks always willing to help and aren't shy to anchor into some good debate with some roundhouses mixed in as you can see. Some, including me, have expressed a drop in build quality in recent years (IMO of course) and I'm thinking your catching some dust, deserved or not, from that. BUT..... it's all in good fun if you ask me and you pickup some really good nuggets of knowledge along the way.....including the 4th and 3rd gen areas where there are alot of crusty ole diehards. Most are smart people who know their ****.

Agreed on both fronts. I will say that the sensitivity found on this forum with regard to making observations/having wishes for the 5th gen is more than i have seen on any other car forum by far though (MBworld, VWVortex, and LegacyGT.com are my experiences to date). At the end of the day it's just a car.
