4Runner - Camping Setup

After reading some posts about camping I thought I am gonna share my setup.

Generally my back-country camping trips are between 2 - 7 days depends on how remote the location is.

I have gear from Chainsaw, axe(s), BBQ, Stove, Lanterns, 12 gauge, Kayak, fishing gear and and and...

I was so close but decided not to go ahead. I am downtown and trailer would need a parking spot.

I have cargo bag for the roof if fishing is not a topic. However.. trailers are aweome :bravo:

In all seriousness though, how does that setup work for you when you drive? Any jiggling or movement?

The current position is only "base camp" position and its totally bouncy but small & easy removable for me and my wife.

I keep the rifle locked and in a case during driving.

The 2 elastic / Velcro bands are actually from my kayak paddle. However its works perfectly and fits in a small pocket. All my gear is small and functional because i have limited storage.

I use two Rubbermaid boxes and a wood board to create platform behind the seats. I am still in the process to find out system that works for me.

Any suggestions - ideas?

What's in all the tubs? Seems like potentially a lot of stuff you do not use, especially for only 1 or 2 nights out.

One tip, that many in the backpacking world use is to really go through your gear each time you get home. Did you use that 2nd hatchet on your last trip? If not leave it at home next time. I'm assuming the shotgun is for bear protection? Is the chain saw really necessary or is it a just in case item? I understand wanting to be prepared for every possible situation, but sometimes you can improvise or find gear with multiple uses.

Do you remove and reinstall the rear seats for each trip or just keep them out all the time?

I like the idea of reviewing the gear every time after using and my wife did this in the spring.
However most of my gear is still stored in boxes in the storage and in the apartment and ready to go. It could be a 2 day trip or 6 days, the gear is always the same. I agree the chainsaw is bulky but one wood run and you have enough wood for two days of camp fire.

Yes the gun is for protection only and the only good mounting place I found are the chairs. We do have a lot of black bears and some grizzles roaming around.

I remove and reinstall the seats every time, we do not have to space for long term storage.

I hate packing and unpacking. If I still toted around that much cargo I'd never go camping at all. I'm glad it works for you, but it's literally painful for me to see a camp setup with that much stuff.

...My old truck was a Nissan Xterra, loved this truck.
This place has a special place in my heart..

I flogged my 2002 xterra relentlessly. Beat it like a rented mule. It just came back for more. I have 2 regrets with that one: not getting it in 4wd; and not buying 2 of them. It was that good to me. Solid as a rock, but it does kinda drive like one too.

Beautiful scenery! I like your camp set-up…looks primitive enough to be easy and stocked enough to be comfy. I remember those days. Before the 4Runner I had an FJ - packed it like a sardine can, maxed out the roof rack AND stacked up the cargo tray…LOL. This was for a 5 day trip in Ocala National Forest:

Awesome set-up... my Xterra used to be fully packed for a 6 days trip except no fire wood. We in Canada have chainsaws :guitar3:

Chainsaws…good one...LoL. The National Parks & Forests don't let us cut anything down - you'd be hard pressed to find anything on the ground worth your while. This particular weekend it was supposed t drop into the 30's (it actually dipped into the 20's which is a national disaster in Florida). I didn't want to take any chances. I envy your outdoors up there. It's amazing. We're planning a trek to Banff - hopefully late summer or early fall next year.

That's me, my family likes to bring a whole load of crap for 3 days, if it was me packing I'd have probably 1/4 of the stuff.

How was Ocala? I've been trying to convince a buddy that we need to make a weekend wheelin'/camping trip down there sometime soon. I'm up in Valdosta, GA, about 20 miles north of FL on i75.

The wheeling is better at the north end of the forest - so good for you guys I guess since it's a bit closer. The campgrounds I've stayed at, Alexander Springs and Clearwater Lake were both excellent. Whether in a camper or in a tent like us - they were top notch. There are endless miles of forest service roads. Most of the driving is not very technical, but there are a few "techy" trails at the north end like I said. If the trip is JUST for wheeling… might not be worth it. The camping & springs - DEFINITELY worth it. Send me a PM to remind me and I'll send you some of the trail maps I have if you end up coming down.

I'm actually heading to Columbus (Ft Benning) in a few weeks. Send me that PM.

Nice setup and beautiful pics! Truly wish I had more time, used to love camping and wheeling/camping was pretty much an every weekend occurrence I H.S. and summer breaks.....ugh jobs and responsibilities.
