4Runner Gas Mileage 36 MPG

Alright I'll try this. I still don't get why it matters if I go from 3/4 of a tank to full or 1/4 tank to full. When the epa tests it they go from a dry tank and put one gallon of gas in it and drive till it dies.

That test is one measured gallon. You're Going From an unknown to unknown+.411 or whatever. Not the same.

Say you started with x gallons, drove 15 miles, filled up to x+.5 gallons, drove another 15miles, then the next pump clicked off 'full' at x+.4 gallons. These are pretty close fills right? But over a ~17 gallon tank that we have that's already around a 6 mpg difference.

Since we dont go from a dry tank, we dont really know how much fuel is in, and we can only go off what we pump in per fill. The less fuel is in the tank, the smaller the margin of error compared to the value of the known we are pumping into the tank.

You know my IS300 has this really cool (but worthless) meter that tells me my instant MPG and if I get a good tail wind and ease of the gas pedal, I get 40+ MPG. But it means nothing. You need to run 3 or 4 tanks of gas through it and average the mpg of them all. I get swings from 21 to 25 on my IS300. The 4runner is even worse depending on weather, driving habits, etc. I can see anything from 18-22 mpg. 36 mpg, that's just fantasyland.

False. Our 4runners run out of gas when there is still approximately 2 gallons left in the tank. There needs to be enough depth of fuel in the tank for the pump to maintain a prime.

Even if it was true, the EPA would do that one gallon test repeatedly and then average all of their measurements. That's how data works. But we have so many more accurate and convenient tools to measure fuel mileage now.

There is like a 10 mile stretch from Zzyzx Rd in Nevada, to Baker CA that is a downhill grade that I literally put it in neutral and coast. 99.9+ MPG engine is just powering AC and radio :reddance:

for the last week and a half i have been driving around a dealer loaner 2015 RX450h. the best i have managed to average out of it is 23mpg... and thats with a vehicle that has the same size engine(ok its a 3.5l) lighter weight, less wind resistance, better technology ect ect ect. and i have been driving it like a grandma. this is a new hybrid. there is no way you are getting anything over 22 mpg. the best i have heard of mileage wise with our 3rd gens is 21-22 mph and thats on the open road 150+ of sustained hwy driving. a friend of mine who bought his 3rd gen a couple of years ago got 25mpg once driving down the columbia gorge -but he had a good strong tail wind the whole time. i think the realistic average for a good running well maintained 3rd gen is 19-21 hwy of you are smooth and empty.

but if you are serious about your truck getting 30+mpg, i got $10k cash ill give you for it as soon as you give me concrete, documented proof. ill even through in my 2004 lexus GX.

I tested my odometer and it's accurate. I have Goodyear wranglers the original size. I know I've heard of people getting around 25 mpg before.I just don't know what's causing the errancy.

Well something isn't accurate! Miles or Gallons or both. I've nursed 22 out of mine, but I don't drive that way normally, 19 or 20 is real world for a 4cylinder.

idk what you guys are talking about, but in my 5speed 4cyl runner, when all the mods it had were headers and and a k&n filter, with stock size tires, I was consistently getting 9.5-10L/100km which is almost 30mpgs. and that was atleast 10+ tanks with combined city and hwy. :bluejump:

Best case scenario is just over 24 mpgs in a 3rd gen, that was all I was able to squeeze out of a bone stock 3rz, 2wd with no added weight, no rack or anything that would resist wind, lowest factory suspension ever put on a 3rd gen, and 3.73 gears rolling on 235's..

Anything higher than that I will instantly call bs on.

Hey ya'll I am trying to figure out how many HPG my TR4 get per tank. So I can compare my rig to yours, my app on my phone tells me I can get 25 Hour per gallon. Has anyone else been able to get that. :jk:

So this happened: I was driving downhill from the top of the mountain and OMG 100 MPG.
