4runner all the way. Better quality, better drivability, usable back seat. If you want a truck get a Tundra or an F150.
I recently traded a 17 Tacoma trd sport in on a new 18 4runner. I drove the truck for nearly two years. It was completely capable and I really liked most things about it.....the drivetrain was not one of those things. Even after purchasing a tune for the truck (OVtune....which helped immensely), I just didn’t enjoy the driving experience. The “last straw” was a road trip we took to NC.....8 hours on hilly interstates helped me make up my mind to trade. Any noteable incline in the road made the truck downshift.....wind or rain on the road made it worse. Even with the tune, the impression that you got was that you were fighting to maintain speed on the highway all the time. As I said, the tune helped it 100%, but it still wasn’t acceptable for me.....sucked all the joy out of driving for me. OVtune has a new tune under development that’s supposed to fix the remaining issues, but I wouldn’t rely on that promise to purchase a truck now.I've read some people have traded in their new tacoma for a 4runner. For me, the 2016 AT 3rd gen taco drivetrain/engine combo/ecu-tcu mapping was unbearable. It also seemed geared too high for the high reving 2gr pseudo Atkinson engine....Other than performance, I liked it a lot. Traded it in on my 5th gen t4r after owning it 1 year. Gas mileage on the highway bucking the usual 15-25mph South Texas wind...my lifted/larger heavier tires 4Runner gets better mileage....albeit by ~2 mpg.
My 3rd gen Tacoma would continuely shift 5-6-5-6-4-5-6-5 on the highway shifting down on every overpass/hill (South Texas is basically flat) or wind gust...bucking a 15-20 mph wind it couldn’t hold 6th gear at 75mph on a flat highway. This killed the mpgs and proved frustrating to drive. Also in town driving felt “dead pedal” unless driven in s-4 or ect engaged. 4Runner drivability much better in town as well! I do understand this is subjective. There are those that are ok with how the 3rd gen taco performs...
I had a 2007 2nd gen 1gr Tacoma for 9 years....loved it! Also love my almost 2 year old 5th gen 4Runner. The engine/drivetrains in these 2 are nearly identical....may be dated but they work very very well and are extremely reliable...are they perfect?...no. But they do drive and perform well!
imho, toyota screwed up with the 3rd gen Tacoma’s engine/drivetrain-performance. And it’s obvious that they are trying to fix their screw up with multiple tsb’s dealing with ecu-tcu mapping. Hope they figure it out. It’s a nice truck but damn....
Question for those who know. 2019 Tacoma 3.5 produces 278hp @ 6000RPM and 265 lbs/ft of torque @ 4600RPM. For the 2019 4Runner 4.0 it's 270hp @ 5600 and 278 lbs/ft @ 4400. Those numbers are kind of similar (the 4Runner's peaks arrive a little earlier), and with the Taco being a few hundred pounds lighter, I would think it would be a wash. But most everyone says the Tacoma is slow. I've never driven a Tacoma - is the auto transmission that bad of a fit for the engine? Or maybe a combination of that plus having to wait a few hundred more RPMs for the peak power to arrive? Just curious. Thanks.

I've never driven the new Taco, but from what I've read here, the Taco is terrible at low RPM (normal driving range) despite the similarity in top end numbers like you're showing here
