Member TheWraith has done a great job documenting his build and his quest for more power out of his 4Runner using available aftermarket modifications. This thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/190157-build-thread-my-rocky.html will show you what happens when you add CAI, exhaust, different pipes and bigger tires and wheels and the best part is he has dyno'ed his mods to show exactly what increases and decreases performance. Well done Wraith! For others who will want to use this data from time to time I have added it to the Mods, FAQ's and Write Up's Sticky here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/92594-modifications-write-ups-quick-links-faqs.html and made a new "performance" category. I certainly am glad we have at least one member that believes in testing and posts the data to help others. Again, great job!

I'm here for the supercharger

I got the final answer why Toyota & TRD ditch the program. From a close friend with a high enough office in Toyota Corp. To tell me that lead engineer for the supercharger division had quit. So with the different heads on our motor it was their decision to scrub the supercharger program all together. Their decision was a cheaper one...

Word from up hi was toyota is not interested in anything that doesn't move 20k units monthly... Made me feel down right sad the direction Toyota USA Corp is heading. Made me wish of the good ol'days ...

Everything we heard was no good durability. With everything being designed lighter to spin faster with less drag, I'm not surprised that the supercharged engine would struggle to meet Toyota's very strict durability requirements. I'm sure cost benefit factored into it, though.

Didn't know the head guy quit, though it doesn't surprise me about them ditching the Supercharger program, particularly since we're most likely going to be seeing Toyota dipping into Turbos heavily in the near future as they continue to shrink their engines. They haven't been performance oriented for a long time and it's shown in their products, only just recently has Lexus started realizing that a big engine, soggy suspension, soggy transmission, and mundane throttle mapping with an ECT Power button does not a performance luxury vehicle make.

Yeah, well that's been their theme for a while now. Make everything lighter, thinner, more porous (oh wait.. I don't think the porous cylinderheads were intended :P). They ran into this with the 2UZ-FE and 3UR-FEs, they made the damn connecting rods so damn thin to begin with that trying to eek more power out of them without redoing the bottom end caused issues. That's the main reason the 2UZ-FE Supercharger was pulled, they kept bending the damn rods.

It's funny because there's only a few things that need to really be beefed up to get those V8's to accept that boost reliably. But then again, Toyota tends to have their moments of weirdness...

Add a safari snorkel, adds +10hp but because the safari snorkel is such a fat fatty apparently that's -10 charisma and -10hp.

I would like to point out that he dyno'd for a baseline (step 3) after installing the TRD shift knob (step 2).

As all TRD components add an immediate ~5hp (proven by the TRD lettering on the CAI) it shouldn't really count as a stock baseline. :biggrin2:

It's okay, URD's twin screw whipple kit will be out by summer apparently.

No joke Have you driven a Cadillac lately. Holy smokes, they are building some super performance luxury these days. ATS-V is going to probably be my next daily. The thing just dominates on all levels (so well balanced). BMW is getting their ass handed to them... Almost feel sorry for Lexus. I bet the engineers feel so defeated... I picture an office with most guys sleeping at their desk.

Too bad they just can't or won't "finish" the car. The engineers did the hard part. The corporate people think cheap ass, low quality interior is acceptable. Americans are so brilliant and yet so f'n stupid!

I don't know if I would go with the twin screw. It depends on what is required and how hard it is to take off..Just because it alot harder to take out than headers & a y pipe. I still have to deal with smog in 4 to 5 years...

well the TRD supercharger was a roots type, so its mounting point is the same. you're going to have a semi permanent installation anyway you look at it. its not like there is a centrifugal type out

I have to see how hard it is to take on and off .. If it's worth the head ache every time I smog my rig here Komifornia. Headers & y pipe might be all I'll do...

i goes it differs from area to area, but my buddy in Corona doesnt have to have his smogged since its newer than 2001

No it doesnt... if you car is less than 6yrs old you don't need to smog. After the car is 6yrs old ... it's every 2 yrs after that..

Plus there's those road way test stations. Highway patrol sets up a smog test on the side of the road and pull you over to see if you car is a gross polluter.

It sux to be a car enthusiasts here...
