Not sure how lovely the photo is, but here's Tiny Town in Morrison, Colorado today.



As a bonus, it includes a tiny replica of the Coney Island Hot Dog Stand in Bailey, Colorado.

I like the Atlas Obscura theme. So, let's continue with it.

WOW, this thing is cool! if someone doesn't beat me to it, I just discovered I drive by one of the places in the Atlas twice a day between work and home. Should be able to get a shot tomorrow.

I've never heard of Atlas Obscura and now I'm obsessed! I also drive by a number of these places every day and there are dozens more I drive by and have never heard of.

Keep the photo game on the AO for a while and I'll bet we can get some cool pictures!

The Tustin Blimp Hangars

Not easy to get close enough for taking a picture as they are grading for apartments all around them and have the whole site fenced off. Luckily they are large enough that you don't need to get all that close and I was able to get on the construction site to shoot these photos.

Here's the first hangar:

There is also a second hangar I was not able to get close to:

Nobody is quite sure what is going to happen to these as the base was shut down in 1999. One of the problems is that they are constructed of wood, owing to wartime steel shortages and a tight time frame. They are large enough that they create their own weather inside including fog and rain, and the result is that the framing is rotted all to hell. At least one of them will have to be demolished if it doesn't fall down first.

There is a plan to keep the second one as part of the "Great Park", possibly retrofitting it as housing, retail or office space. It won't be cheap and no one has stepped up to take on the project, but the land is too valuable to allow them to just sit there..

Across the street they have built a new strip center in anticipation of all of the new residents who will soon be rattling the new apartments. In honor of one of the previous contest I decided to eat breakfast at Dunkin' and take another picture:

I like the way they designed the building to mimic the hangar behind it.

I'd like to stay with the Atlas Obscura pictures for a while. Lots of cool stuff out there.

"In the ensuing years, the model town was damaged by numerous fires and floods. By 1977, Tiny Town (it was renamed in 1939), was in a state of total disrepair, but a model train buff named Lyle Fulkerson bought the attraction anyway. Unfortunately, just as he began his restoration, he was tragically killed by a runaway train car on his way to visit Tiny Town. "

Wow. Lots of information, and the PDF history of the Tustin Hangars is a great read. Thanks for pulling that together. There’s a lot of interesting military aviation history in California. Further north, in Mountain View, is Moffett Field, with three blimp hangars and similar history.

Hangar One is a skeleton now, it’s skin removed to abate the release of toxins into the bay. Google is leasing the site now and is paying for its restoration.

Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum – Fremont, California

One of the early on huge hubs of filmmaking, back in the silent era, was in Fremont, CA, a nice city that nowadays nobody outside the bay area knows about. They have an annual event, the Charlie Chaplin FIlm Festival, sice Charlie Chaplin made it big as a movie star working in this area for Essanay Studios. My wife and I have gone before and it is a fun time.

Charlie Chaplin was paid a $10,000 signing bonus to become a contract star for Essanay, and $1,250 per week. In 2019 dollars, that is a $250,000 signing bonus, and $31,000 per week, not too shabby!

I took these photos for this challenge on sunday, so it doesn't qualify to complete the challenge anymore since others have posted other cool things, but I thought I share anyway.

4Runner Photo Game

Since it’s still going, here’s my entry into the Atlas Obscura challenge. This is the Eros Bendato sculpture in Citygarden in downtown Saint Louis. The large decapitated head is from Eros, the Greek god of love and desire. A sculpture of a headless body is a few blocks away, but I’m not sure they go together. The Atlas notes that a similar sculpture is located in Kraków, Poland.

Was going to go with a new challenge: Your 4Runner next to a different generation 4Runner. But also like the Atlas Obscura challenge. Challengers choice?

Brookhurst Community Park

The attraction is a collection of oddball concrete structures that kids are supposed to want to play on. From what I could tell they *don't*, as the park was crowded and no one was anywhere near the structures. I was able to drive up a service road to get these pictures.

My third gen next to my father in law's 4th gen. He bought it new when he lived in the Midwest, the 4x4 is good for the inclement weather they get out there. Unfortunately, he isn't very interested in going camping or wheeling with me.

Graffiti art. The city gave this wall to be artsy graffiti'd. After the artists did their thing, some other people graffiti'd their graffiti thus pissing off the original graffitiers and starting some lame hipster war.

I guess since the challenge deadline passed any old cloud pic will do. These clouds are interesting because I am viewing them during a spur-of-the-moment drive to Kansas yesterday.
